  1. WiGig technologiesIEEE 802.11ad/ay Roman Kovalchukov Laboratory of Electronics and Communications Engineering

  2. 802.11ad History • WiGig alliance promotes the IEEE 802.11ad Announced in May 2009 • WiGig announced the release of its certification ready version 1.1 specs in June 2011 • WiGig & Wi-Fi Alliance merged in March 2013 • Wi-Fi Alliance announced the launch of its WiGig certification program in Oct 2016

  3. 802.11ad Very High Throughput (VHT) main specs • 802.11ad Operates at 60 GHz frequency • Use up to four 2.16 GHz channels. Over 8 GHz of Bandwidth • Each channel supports up to 6.75675 Gbps (using OFDM) • In Lower complexity single channel (SC) up to 2.224 Gbps • Range 1-10 meters • Support up to 32 antennas (for phase beamforming)

  4. 60 GHz Spectrum allocation

  5. 60 GHz Spectrum allocation

  6. 802.11ay Project Goals • Task Group ay is expected to develop an amendment that defines standardized modifications to both the IEEE 802.11 physical layers (PHY) and the IEEE 802,11 medium access control layer (MAC) that enables at least one mode of operation capable of supporting a maximum throughput of at least 20 gigabits per second (measured at the MAC data service access point), while maintaining or improving the power efficiency per station. This amendment also defines operations for license-exempt bands above 45 GHz while ensuring backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy directional multi-gigabit stations (defined by IEEE 802.11ad-2012 amendment) operating in the same band.

  7. 802.11ay Very High Throughput (VHT) main specs • 802.11ay Operates at 60 GHz frequency • Link rate per stream 20-44 Gbps • Backward compatible with 802.11 ad • With channel bounding provides up to 8.64 GHz bandwidth • MIMO support up to four streams (up to 176 Gbps) • 802.11ay supports 256 QAM

  8. 802.11ay Future Deployments • High performance public Wi-Fi networks in 2019 • Pre-standard 802.11ay chipsets started shipping in 2018 • Backhaul and node interconnection focus • Transmitting rates up to 40 Gpbs at ranges 300-500 meters • Such companies as Nokia, Facebook, Qualcomm and Deutsche Telekom are working on these early deployments

  9. 802.11ay Project Current Timeline Status (26.11.19) • Project Authorization Request approved - March 2015 • Initial Task Group Meeting - May 2015 • Draft 1.0 of the amendment - November 2017 • Draft 2.0 of the amendment - August 2018 • Draft 2.1 of the amendment - October 2018 • Draft 3.0 of the amendment - January 2019 • Final 802.11 Working Group approval - March 2020 • Final 802 EC approval - March 2020 http://www.ieee802.org/11/Reports/tgay_update.htm
