  1. Visualizing Multiple Physician Office Locations Exercise 9 GIS in Planning and Public Health Wansoo Im, Ph.D

  2. Download Municipalities (Clipped to Coast) from the NJDEP website and the Doctor Location data from http://www.vertices.com/GISPLAN/exercise08/ . Extract files and display in ArcMap.

  3. In ArcMap, right-click on the doc_loc layer and select Open Attribute Table.

  4. Choose Options near the bottom of the window and select Export Data. Save as doc_xy.

  5. Open Excel and Open the file: doc_xy.dbf. In order to open the .dbf file All Files must be selected for File Types

  6. Insert new column and name it X_Y. Select first empty cell in new column and type =D2(or cell number of first X)&"_"&E2(or cell number of first Y). After this result appears in comumn X_Y, copy the result and paste into the entire column.

  7. Under Data, select PivotTable and PivotChart Wizard. Select Next on opening screen, then select next on the following screen (Range should read Database). Choose Layout and drag x_y into both the Row and Data areas.

  8. Copy and paste Pivot Table into a new sheet and label the columns X_Y and Total. Insert a new column next to X_Y

  9. Select the X_Y Column. Open the Convert Text to Columns Wizard and choose Delimited.

  10. Under Delimiters, choose Tab and Other with an underscore ( _ ).

  11. Save file as xydoc.dbf

  12. Make sure the file type is DBF4 (dBASE IV)

  13. Under Tools in ArcMap, select Add XY Data.

  14. Choose xydoc.dbf as the table and make sure the projection is correct.

  15. Right-click on the new layer and choose Properties. Click the tab for Symbology. Choose the appropriate Value. Then, under Quantities on the right-hand side, choose Graduated symbols. Apply these changes.

  16. Again under Layer Properties, you can double-click on the Symbols in order to change their sizes or colors.

  17. In the Layout View, you can now add Title, Legend, North Arrow, Name, and Borders.
