The Nature of humanity • God’s vice-regent • Duty to follow the faith of Islam, so make the world the sort of place God wants to be. • Life is simply preparation for the eternal life‘Be sure We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits of your toil, but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere’ (Qur’an s2 v155) • The Free will • Life as a test and preparation

  5. The last day in the Qur’an • The world will disappear • Soul and body will be re-joined in the Day of Judgement. ‘They say, “what! When we are reduced to bones and dust should we really be raised up to be a new creation?... Who will cause us to return? “Say “ He who created you first.”’ (s 17 v49-50) • No one knows when the Last Day will be • Every one will be resurrected The angel Israfeel will blow the trumpet

  7. What can you remember?

  8. Judgement in the Qur’an On the Day that the Hour will be established,- that Day shall (all men) be sorted out. Then those who have believed and worked righteous deeds, shall be made happy in a Mead of Delight. And those who have rejected Faith and falsely denied our Signs and the meeting of the Hereafter,- such shall be brought forth to Punishment. (s30 v14-16) Summarise in a sentence.

  9. Other views on Judgement • ‘Whoever does a wrong will be recompensed for it, and he will not find besides Allah a protector or a helper.’ (S 4 v123) • God will intercede who have tried their best but committed sins • After all, God is the Merciful, The Compassionate and He will surely show mercy on the Last Day

  10. What is heaven and hell like? • The Qur’an paints very vivid picture of heaven and hell • Heaven (al’ Jannah); Garden with streams, rivers, flowers, plants, all desire will be fulfilled, recline on couches / sofas, eat the choicest fruit and drink wine which delights but not intoxicate. • Hell (Jahannam); horrors, inhabitants chained up, boiling water, puss, garments of fire.

  11. After life in later Muslim Thought • Majority Muslims accept the teachings of the Qur’an literally and as they are traditionally interpreted. • Some scholars see the descriptions in the Qu’an as metaphorical; God explains the Garden in terms of hoors(beautiful young women), castles, trees, and rivers in order that they may be understood better. • Modern Muslims; Bad Muslims and good Jews and Christians will stay in hell for a short period. • Very few argue that after-life is just spiritual, Qur’an is allegorical for them, your soul is judged and goes to spiritual heaven or hell. Which one of these interpretations do you agree with?

  12. What do you think are the Implications of Akhirah? • Whole of their life is noted, will be judged by God on the Last Day • Always to be concerned about submission • Whole life is worship, Muslims follow the Shari’ah (God’s law) because they will be judged. • Restricted life • Fear of accountability; Heaven or hell, so Behave for the pleasure of God
