Research Councils ARTS & HUMANITIES RESEARCH COUNCIL Joint Research Programme (JRP) (announced 14th January 2009) • Up to one million Euros funding for collaborative research projects. • Organised by HERA , facilitated in UK through AHRC, to enable trans-national Collaborative Research Projects in two humanities research areas: “Cultural dynamics: Inheritance and identity” “Humanities as a Source of Creativity and Innovation” • Briefings on Jan 29th (London) and Jan 30th Glasgow (30th) on how best to put an application together.  Register at:hera@ahrc.ac.uk • Outline proposals 7th April, full proposals invited May 2009 Research Leave • September 2008 round cancelled, next round deadline 5th March • Announcement expected end January on ‘new fellowship scheme’ likely to replace research leave

Research Councils ENGINEERING & PHYSICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH COUNCIL (cont) Signposting • Highlight priority research areas in responsive mode • Engineering: synthetic biology, water engineering; ICT: microelectronic design and silicon technology; Physics: physics/life science interface; Nanoscience: nanometrology, nanotoxicology IDEAS Factory and Sandpits • New ways to generate research projects with annual call for IDEAS topics. • Sandpit interactive workshop with multidisciplinary mix of participants. Calls for sandpits published on website e.g. Detecting Terrorist Activities (DTAct) (CPNI, HO, ESRC): Deadline: 12th February Study Days at EPSRC (Swindon26 January, 23 April, 16 July, 22 October) • Overview of EPSRC, introduction to peer review, involve • presentations, mock panels, public engagement exercise parallel sessions on specific topics including proposal writing tips, delivery plan, exploitation, fellowships, international and doctoral training • Research Office scheduling EPSRC Study Day in Durham at start of July
