  1. The MOLE Date:

  2. PART II MOLAR MASS

  3. We know that 6.02 x 1023 particles= 1 MOL but… HOW MUCH does A MOLE WEIGH ?

  4. If you had a mole of bricks ants donuts elephants Which would have the most “pieces”?

  5. If you had a mole of bricks ants donuts elephants Which mole would weigh the most?

  6. The relationship between amu and mass of a mole: Recall atomic mass units - amu. This is the mass of an atom of a given element A mole is the # of atoms in exactly 12.0g of Carbon atoms. (The amu of carbon is 12) This means that 12 g of C contains exactly 6.02 x 1023 carbon atoms

  7. What is the amu of C ? 12.0001 amu C has 6 p+ and 6n Mass of each p & n = 1.67 x 10-24 g 12 X 1.674 x 10-24 g = 2.004 x 10-23 g = mass C atom How many C atoms are in 1 mole? 6.02 x 1023 atoms/mol What is the mass of a mole of C atoms? 6.02 x 1023 atoms mole 2.004 x 10-23 g = atom 12. 01 grams mol

  8. How can you find the mass of a mole of any ELEMENT ? LOOK on the PERIODIC TABLE ! it is the same number as the amu A mole of Cu has a mass of 63.55g A mole of Ne has a mass of 20.18 A mole of Ca has a mass of 40.08g

  9. How can you find the mass of a mole of any COMPOUND ? FIRST - get the FORMULA Need to know 1) what atoms and 2) how many of each

  10. How can you find the mass of a mole of any COMPOUND ? FIRST - get the FORMULA Need to know 1) what atoms and 2) how many of each THEN look on the PERIODIC TABLE ! Check the amu of EACH ELEMENT in the FORMULA and ADD!

  11. Example #4: How much does a mole of water weigh? the FORMULA - H2O 1) what atoms and 2) how many of each How many H = How many O = 2 1

  12. How much does a mole of water weigh? THEN look on the PERIODIC TABLE ! Check the amu of EACH ELEMENT in the FORMULA and ADD! H: 2 x 1 g/mol = 2 O: 1 x 16 g/mol = 16 molar mass = 18g/mol a mole of water = 18 g / mol

  13. example #5: What is the molar mass of carbon dioxide - CO2. • molecular formula CO2 • How many C = 1 • atomic mass of C = 12 • How many O = 2 • atomic mass of O = 16 C 1 x 12 = 12 O 2 x 16 = +32 44 g/mol One mole of CO2 has a mass = 44g

  14. Worksheet #1 Molar Mass Do the following computations on a separate piece of lined paper. You will need your periodic table/ion list and a calculator would be helpful Molar mass of ammonia – NH3 What is the mass of 1 mole of SO2? Molar mass potassium carbonate – ION LIST!\\

  15. a. What is the molar mass of copper? b. How much would 2 moles of copper weigh? a What is the mass of 1 mole of silver chloride? b. If you have 0.5 mol of silver chloride, what would be the mass? Molar mass of glucose – C6H12O6?
