  1. THE TEMPATION OF CHRIST

  2. Matt. 4:1-11, “Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.  And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.   And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.   But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

  3. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

  4. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.   Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.   Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.   Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.”

  5. The taunting of Satan, “If thou be the Son of God” had to be aggravating to Jesus. • Though the temptation has been studied on numerous occasions, let’s dissect it so that we may learn from it!

  6. I. THREE TEMPTATIONS

  7. Matt. 4:3, “And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” 1. They are hierarchical in scale

  8. The first: Jesus was hungry, and He was asked to turn stones into bread. • What is so wrong of turning stones into bread? It wasn’t that He couldn’t do it. It wasn’t that God would forbid Him from doing it. It was the fact that the act was not authorized by God. He would not heed to Satan’s request, no matter how trivial, He was on the earth to do His Father’s will.

  9. The Lord’s response points this out. • “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” • Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 8:3.

  10. The Second: Matt. 4:6, “And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.” • The devil moves the thoughts of Jesus from the extreme of distrusting God to now testing God!

  11. Satan quotes from Psa. 91:11, 12, but not accurately. It reads, “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.   They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.” • Satan leaves out, “to keep thee in all thy ways.” • Jesus knew this was not the will of the Father but the desire of Satan.

  12. The Lord’s response: Matt. 4:7, “Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” • Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 6:16. • Wantonly provoking God was the same as tempting God. This Jesus would not do!

  13. The Third: Matt. 4:8, 9, “Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.”

  14. Note the words of Luke: Luke 4:6, 7, “And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.   If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.”

  15. Instead of settling for the minority, Satan offers Christ the majority. • Not the few but the many! • Jesus was asked to break the first commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3), and second, “Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them” (Exodus 20:5).

  16. The Lord’s Response: “Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Matt. 4:10). • Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 6:13. • Jesus uses the word “only” not found in the Hebrew or Septuagint, to emphasize the negative and prohibitory feature of the command.

  17. 2. The Three Temptations Are Harsh • Satan appeals to the Lord’s Sonship. He strikes at the very essence of Christ’s being. • Satan is very aware who Christ’s was!

  18. The Devils Vs. the World

  19. 3. The Three Temptations are Harrowing • The word “Harrowing” means agonizing or torturous. • Jesus was not tempted with fame or fortune. He was tempted with things that appealed to His nature. He wanted the kingdoms of the world to worship God.

  20. II. THREE RESPONSES

  21. 1. Each Response Was From the Word • “IT IS WRITTEN!” • How often would Christ say, “Have ye not read!” (Matt. 12:3, 5, 19, 19:4, 21:16).

  22. 2. Each Response Was Wholly Given • He did not partially quote the scriptures, or took them out of context. He carefully used the words written by inspiration. • So often denominational preachers use bits and pieces of the Bible.

  23. III. THREE ACTS FOLLOW

  24. 1. Satan Leaves Him • Luke 4:2 states that this leaving was merely for a season. • He would continue to tempt the Lord throughout His ministry. Most often through the scribes and Pharisees or even His own disciples. • Mark 12:15, “Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.”

  25. 2. The Angels Minister To Him • The angels did this to Elijah in 1 Kings 19:5. They supplied His physical needs. Yet there were occasions that angels came and supported the Lord spiritually. • Luke 22:43, “And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.”

  26. 3. His Ministry Begins • Matt. 4:12, 13, 17, “Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee; And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim… From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

  27. IV. THREE CONCLUSIONS

  28. 1. You Will Be Tempted In One of Three Ways • 1 Jn. 2:16, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

  29. 2. You Can Resist • James 4:7, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” • 1 Cor. 10:13, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

  30. 3. You Will Be Rewarded • Spiritually: It is pleasurable to defeat Satan. • Emotionally: It makes us happy to resist temptation. • Eternally: We will witness the final defeat of Satan when he is cast into the lake of fire (Rev. 20:10).
