  1. ¿Cómo erestú? What are you like? In this lesson, we will expand our basic conversation to be a little more personal! This will be the last lesson on basic conversation for a little while.

  2. Let’s look at English grammar When you describe what someone is like, you use adjectives to describe them. For example… He is very lazy. They are such nice people. She is really smart. My friend is so talented.

  3. Here are some Spanish sentences with adjectives • No me gusta trabajar, soy perezoso. I don’t like to work, I’m lazy. • Yo soy muy sociable. Me encanta pasar tiempo con amigos. I’m very sociable. I love to spend time with friends. • El chico es muy deportista, le gusta mucho practicar deportes. The boy is very sports-minded (sporty). He really likes to practice sports.

  4. In Spanish, all nouns have a gender. What gender are the following words? The wrench. The wall. The chair. The bat. The door. The house. The computer. The oven. The desk. Trick question! Nouns do not have genders in English.

  5. Gender of nouns • In Spanish, every noun has a gender. Before we get into that, lets look at gender a different way.

  6. Definite articles. (“The”) • There are two ways to say “the”. Masculine or Feminine el la

  7. Masculine nouns If a noun has “el” in front of it, it is masculine. El chico (boy) El amigo (male friend) Also, typically the noun will end in “o”.

  8. Feminine nouns Nouns that have “la” in front of them are feminine. La chica (the girl) La amiga (female friend) Also, typically these nouns end in “a”.

  9. The main idea Words that end in “o” are typically masculine. Words that end in “a” are typically feminine. MasculineFeminine El chico La chica El amigo La amiga

  15. Adjectives have to agree with the gender of the noun This may sound a little confusing at first. But, it’s really easy once you get the hang of it. La chica es muy perezosa y no le gusta trabajar. La means that the noun (chica) is feminine. We add “a” so the adjective matches with the gender of the noun.

  17. There are some adjectives that remain the same, regardless of the noun gender • Sociable • Inteligente • Sociable • Deportista • Impaciente • Paciente These do not need to change. You can say “El chico es impaciente” or “La chica is impaciente”
