Driver Distraction • According to a NHTSA / Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) study, 80% of crashes and 65% of near-crashes are due to driver distraction. • Over 3,300 people were killed and 387,000 injured in distracted driving accidents in 2011 in the USA. • Major distractions leading to crashes are: • Cell phone use • Texting • Reaching for an object inside the vehicle • Looking at something outside the vehicle • Reading • Applying makeup • DAS can help improve safety for distracted drivers and those around them – e.g. Lane Keep Assist and Automatic Emergency Braking for cars & pedestrians
