History of Christmas in the United States Because the US is so culturally diverse, culture puts its own twist to the holiday. on June 26, 1870, Christmas was declared a federal holiday, where many government employees get the day off. Today, Americans eagerly decorate trees, carol, bake, and shop for the Christmas season.

  3. Santa Claus inthe US In the US, St. Nicholas is known as Santa Claus.

  4. Customs in The United states *Christians celebrate it as the birth of their savior Jesus Christ. *People traditionally decorate different types of pine trees. *Friends and Family will exchange gifts with one another *People might gather for a Christmas day meal

  5. Special Foods • People might cook hams, turkey, or barbecue for the holidays. • It is a tradition for people to have Christmas parties in which they have sweets and baked goods. • Wassail is a popular spiced apple juice drink that is made this time of year.

  6. Gifts People usually exchange gifts on Christmas day. However, some families might allow the children to open one gift on Christmas eve. Different types of gifts are exchanged. Some gifts might be from Santa Claus and some from parents, family, or friends. Stocking might be filled with smaller presents such as candy, fruit, gift cards, or etc. Children could be given bigger gifts at Christmas than other celebrations during the year.

  7. Symbols & Decorations symbols of Christmas include angels, bells, candy canes, Christmas trees, Nativity scenes, poinsettias, Santa Claus, snowflakes, and wreaths. People decorate their houses with lights and put out yard decorations.

  8. Celebration Christmas is celebrated on December 25 in the united states. People may get together with friends or family before or after this date, but the holiday itself is celebrated on December 25.
