  2. SUMMARY OF EXPIREMENTS • Radiometer • The radiometer reacts to sunlight. To move the vanes, two being black and two being white, sunlight must be shined amongst the vanes. We observed the black vanes absorb more light than the white vanes because dark colors attract more sunlight than light colors. • Sunlight vs. Shade • Taped 2 thermometers to cardboard box. Placed one side in sunlight while other in shade. Recorded temperatures at the beginning, after 5 minutes, and after 10 minutes. • START: Sunlight 76, Shade 73 • 5 MIN: Sunlight 94, Shade 80 • 10 MIN: Sunlight 98, Shade 82

  3. …CONTINUED • Glow Toys • Took 6 starred glows. Shined three in sunlight for 2-3 minutes while other 3 remained in dark pouch labeled green. After 2-3 minutes elapsed, removed stars from pouch and placed all stars on ground in dark room. Observed which stars appeared brighter. • Solar Panel • Connected solar panel to motor with fan blade. Placed panel towards the sun to produce motion. Observed which angle from the ground produced the strongest motion. • (60 degrees)

Explanation • According to: http://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/project_ideas/Chem_p072.shtml • The stars which were absorbed the most light reflected the most light due to a chemical reaction. When you shine a light on an object, such as a glow-in-the-dark toy, you are bombarding it with photons. Photons are what light is made of—small packets of energy that have zero mass and travel at the speed of light. When a stream of photons collides with a solid material, the photons interact with the electrons in the material. Electrons that absorb photons move to a higher energy level. Eventually, the electrons return to the lower "normal" energy level, called the ground state. When the electrons moves to the ground state, the energy stored in each electron is released as a photon, or light

  6. conclusion • The glow in the dark toys, along with the other three experiments we participated in, proved sunlight is the key component to radiant energy transformations.

  7. Real world examples • LIGHT BULB • If you put your hand above the bulb you are sensing the heat given off by convection, the heating of the air around and in contact with the bulb as it rises, and by radiation, but if you hold your hand below the bulb you are sensing almost pure radiant heat. • CAMP FIRE • Sit close enough and you get burned without coming into contact with the flames. The radiated energy is in the form of heat.
