  1. APPLYING FOR NPQH Getting The Process And Language Right

  2. Application (Step 1) • Self-assessment online – don’t avoid this step – it gets you into ‘the language’ & gauges readiness • There are six sections matching the six areas of the National Standards for Headship • Explore the videos, motivational & career material on the NCSL website: • www.nationalcollege.org.uk/programmes/npqh • Discussions with your headteacher – does s/he support your ambition to be a headteacher?

  3. (Step 2) • The application form – much slimmed down – covers 3 areas: • Key Areas of Headship • Readiness to be a trainee Head • Outline of post and experience • What has been removed: CPD and self-assessment of development needs • It will take time to complete, but approach it positively: it allows you to reflect on your experience/expertise & it will be used again at your Assessment & Development Event

  4. Let’s look at the application form in more detail • Readiness For Trainee Headteacher • provide at least three reasons why you feel you are ready to undertake this traineeship and therefore are ready for headship in 18 months – a mixture of evidence from self & feedback from others • what does someone who is 18 months away from headship “look like” in terms of experience & expertise? Who might give feedback to you?

  5. Readiness: CPD • include in the “readiness” section, with dates, of significant CPD from the last 3 years and explain for each example: • what the professional development was • Why you undertook it • What you learned and how it changed your practice • How it has prepared you for headship • How effectively can you make the link between recent CPD, recent experiences of leading and two development needs? • Suggest some examples of what you would consider to be “significant CPD” • Share a personal example that meets the criteria

  6. Readiness: Development Needs • Identify two of the Key Areas where you have specific development needs which you would like to address during NPQH – include: • what the development need is • How & why you have identified it • What you think you need to do to address it • How it will prepare you further for headship

  7. Key Areas for Headship • a best example for each of the 6 Key Areas, demonstrating your experience & expertise in relation to the National Standards: • What the activity was you undertook; include date & duration of each activity • Your leadership role in its achievement or development • The reason for undertaking the activity • Its positive impact – with quantifiable evidence • Give an example for Key Area 2 – Learning & Teaching

  8. Step 3 • Submit your online application by the closing date • Ensure that your supporter submits his/her online supporting statement by the closing date • End of Readiness Stage 1 • You will get a decision after regional & national moderation (with feedback, if you are unsuccessful) • Ready to proceed to Readiness Stage 2: • Assessment & Development Centre

  9. Step 4 • two online self-reflection activities: • 360º diagnostic, including anonymous feedback from colleagues & your headteacher • start your Personal Development Record (PDR) your application form will give you a start with this • THEN … the two-day • Assessment & Development Event

  10. Step 5 • two days, non-Residential – normally, 1 Lead Assessor, 4 assessors and 8 applicants • 5 assessment tasks (4 on Day 1 & 1 on Day 2) • In-depth interview (1-1½ hours) on Day 2 • You will be told whether you are ready to proceed to the NPQH programme as a trainee headteacher • You will identify & record strengths & development points
