  2. Cleft Lips & Cleft Palates • A person has a cleft lip if there is a gap in their lip, and they have a cleft palate when there is a hole in the top or the back of their mouth. • A cleft lip or palate is something that people are born with.

  3. What is Operation Smile? • Operation smile is a charity that tries to stop people having cleft lips & cleft palates. • They provide medical operations to transform the lives of those affected and stop them being bullied. http://www.operationsmile.org/

  4. Blue Peter’s ‘Send a Smile’ • Blue peter has started an appeal to make gowns for them to wear at the operation making their lips normal. • Children like you can make the gowns so the money can be spent for the operation not the gowns. • The next few pages will explain how you can make one.

  5. Step 1 • You now need a t-shirt - so get one of your parents old plain t-shirts like this:

  6. Step 2 • You now cut a line at the back from the bottom to the top like this:

  7. Step 3 • Make 3 holes on each side by the cut like this:

  8. Step 4 • Now get some ribbon to put though the holes like this:

  9. Step 5 • Now tie the ribbon together in a bow like this:

  10. Step 6 • Now decorate the front of your t-shirt!
