Inertia and Momentum

Inertia and Momentum. Definitions. Inertia : The tendency for an object to resist change in motion (moving or not moving). Momentum : A measurement of how difficult it is to stop an object (this is a number). Momentum= quantitative = numbers Inertia = qualitative = descriptive. Factors.

  1. Inertia and Momentum

  2. Definitions • Inertia: The tendency for an object to resist change in motion (moving or not moving). • Momentum: A measurement of how difficult it is to stop an object (this is a number). • Momentum= quantitative = numbers • Inertia = qualitative = descriptive

  3. Factors • Velocity and Mass: The bigger your mass, the greater your inertia and momentum. The greater your speed, the greater your inertia and momentum.

  4. Practice • A truck with a mass of 2000kg is stopped along the side of the high way. • Does this have more or less momentum and inertia than a similar truck moving at 20mph?

  5. Comparison Practice • A skateboarder is practicing new tricks outside of the school (breaking the rules). He rides on flat ground, and there is no wind push him faster. • Does he have more momentum on flat ground or going up hill? • What about down hill?

  6. Comparison Practice • Design your own! (practice with a partner next to you) • Good ideas get candy!

  7. Video Analysis 1 • Watch the video below and determine how the momentum and inertia change over time. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cCX8E18fY4&feature=relmfu

  8. Video Analysis 2 • Watch the video below and determine how the momentum and inertia change over time. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qybUFnY7Y8w

  9. Video Analysis 3 • Watch the video below and determine how the momentum and inertia change over time. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Eb3Sf6Kf1I

  10. Conservation • Conservation of Momentum: the momentum of an object or group of objects stays the same unless an outside force acts upon it
