History • Around the 4th century B.C. the present Czech Republic was populated by Celts • At the end of 5th and the beginning of 6th century Slavs settled in the territory of Bohemia and Moravia • The Lucembourg Dynasty (1310 - 1437) • The kindom of Bohemia reached its height of power and prestige during Charles IV • 1348 - Charles University was established - the first university founded north of the Alps • The Hussite Revolution (1419 - 1436) • The Habsburg Dynasty (1526 - 1918) • Foundation of the modern Czech nation • second half of the 19th century - the most developed land of the monarchy • Independent State (from 1918) • 28.10.1918 - The Czechoslovak Republic became one of the ten most developed countries of the world • February 1948 - communist takeover • November 1989 - overthrow of the Communist regime - election of Vaclav Havel as a president of Czechoslovakia • 1.1.1993 - Czechoslovakia was peacefully divided and the independent Czech and Slovak Republics were founded

Food and drinks • The Czech cuisine is rich in meat, most usually served with dumplings or potatoes • Czech specialty: dumplings filled with fruit • Czech beer is one of the best in the world (Pilsen, Budvar and Velkopopovic´s beer) • Excellent wine is produced in South Moravia and the Bohemian regions around Žernoseky and Roudnice • Becherovka - Czech herb liqueur • In central Moravia plum brandy (slivovice) is very popular (50% alcohol)
