  2. The Villarrica volcano in southern Chile erupted, spewing ash and lava up to 1,000m (3,300ft) into the air. According to Chile's Ministry of Mining, its last major eruption was in 1985 and there have been smaller eruptions since.

  3. Thousands of Russians, including his daughter Zhanna (seen here), have bid farewell to murdered Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov as his funeral took place in the capital, Moscow. A fierce critic of President Vladimir Putin, he was shot dead on a bridge near the Kremlin wall on Friday night.

  4. Displaced Somali families help push a truck carrying their belongings from a camp which was closed down by Somali forces, leaving hundreds of families without shelter in the capital Mogadishu.

  5. The 22 humans who live on Aoshima Island, off Ehime prefecture in Japan, are greatly outnumbered by a population of more than 120 cats.

  6. Hounds of the Atherstone Hunt, which celebrated its 200th anniversary this week, look out from a horse box as they eagerly wait for the hunt in Bosworth, England, to begin.

  7. Thousands of people were left stranded after a plane skidded off the runway at Kathmandu airport, forcing the closure of Nepal's only international hub. Those on board were not seriously injured but the airport's director said that 160 flights had been cancelled.

  8. A militant Korean nationalist slashed the face of the US ambassador to South Korea at a breakfast meeting in Seoul. The envoy narrowly escaped serious injury. It took 80 stitches to close his facial wound, which was 11cm (4in) long and 3cm deep, doctors said. Security officers subdued the attacker, one pinning him down with a shoe on his neck, until he was arrested.

  12. The Duke of Cambridge was greeted by Lion Dancers performing in a Shishimai ceremony in Ishinomaki, Japan. Prince William was on a week-long visit to Japan and China to promote UK relations.

  13. Elena Nikitina of Russia crashed during her first run in the women's skeleton race at the Bob and Skeleton World Championships in Winterberg, Germany.

  14. US actor Harrison Ford escaped with minor injuries after a plane crash in Los Angeles. The 72-year-old star of the Indiana Jones and Star Wars films crash-landed his vintage plane on a golf course. He's expected to make a full recovery.

  15. A 17-year-old at a boxing class at the National Institute of Sport in Managua, Nicaragua. A study by the Psychology alumni of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN-Managua) revealed that about a million women in Nicaragua suffer from domestic violence.
