  1. SPI 0807:12.1 Electromagnetic Induction Use the right arrow button to advance through the presentation Science Notes Making Electricity Using Magnets • Magnets and a coil of wire can create electrical current • This process is called electromagnetic induction • The magnet has to move through (or around) the coil or The coil has to move through (or around) the magnet • See the diagram below • Notice that the bar magnet is moving through the coil of wire Note: another name for electrical current is electricity Note: another name for a coil of wire is a solenoid Note: Electromagnetic induction is how most electricity is generated Here is a picture of electromagnetic induction in action Here is the solenoid (coil of wire)

  2. Quick Review SPI 0807:12.1 Electromagnetic Induction Science 1) The two pictures below both show electromagnet induction. On your paper describe this process in two parts (p439) Picture 01 Picture 02 2) Picture 01 shows a bar magnet being pushed through a solenoid. How would you increase the electrical current? (p439: Fig 2, Letter B) 3) Picture 02 shows an electrical generator. What are the 5 key components of a generator ? (p440: Fig 4)

  3. SPI 0807:12.1 Electromagnetic Induction Science Notes 1) The two pictures below both show electromagnet induction. Describe this process in two parts (p439) Answer(s): Part 1: You must have a magnet and coil of wire Part 2: You must move the magnet through or around the coil… OR …move the coil over or around the magnet Picture 01 Picture 02

  4. SPI 0807:12.1 Electromagnetic Induction Science Notes 2) (Answer) Picture 01 shows a bar magnet being pushed through a solenoid. How would you increase the electrical current? (p439: Fig 2, Letter B) Picture 01

  5. SPI 0807:12.1 Electromagnetic Induction Science Notes 3) Picture 02 shows an electrical generator. What are the 5 key components of a generator ? (p440: Fig 4) (4) (1) (2) (5) (3) Picture 02
