  1. A STUDY ON INDIVIDUAL PERCEPTIONS OF ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE Belinda I. Fajardo Environmental and Social Services Office Department of Public Works and Highways Manila, Philippines

  2. OUTLINE OF PRESENTATION INTRODUCTION OBJECTIVES OF STUDY CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY RESULTS OF THE STUDY RECOMMENDATIONS

  3. INTRODUCTION • Awareness of road traffic noise • Live and work in a healthy environment

  4. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY Determine level of individual awareness of road traffic noise. Investigate individual perceptions and responses to noise pollution.

  5. Conceptual Framework PARAMETERS TRAFFIC ROAD ENVIRONMENT VEHICLE SOURCE TRANSMISSION RECEPTORS INDIVIDUAL PROFILE AWARENESS PERCEPTION IMPACTS ANNOYANCE

  6. CHARACTERISTICS OF TRAFFIC NOISE • UBIQUITOUS • CONSTANT NOISE FROM CERTAIN VEHICLES • NOISE FROM ENGINE ACCELERATION, ROUGH ROADS, STOP-AND-GO TRAFFIC, ENGINE BRAKES, TIRES FRICTION, POOR VEHICLE MAINTENANCE • DRIVERS’ BEHAVIOUR BY USING HORNS

  7. Methodology of the Study • Field Measurements • Noise levels at 3 survey sites: • Taft Avenue • Quezon Avenue • Camp Crame Questionnaire Survey Variables characterizing perception of individuals on road traffic noise Data Collection Data Analysis Descriptive and Quantitative Results Conclusions and Recommendations

  8. STUDY AREA Quezon Avenue EDSA Taft Avenue Manila Bay Laguna de Bay EDSA – Epifanio delos Santos Avenue

  9. RESULTS • NOISE LEVELS EXCEED PHILIPPINE STANDARDS of 75 dB at 3 survey sites:

  10. RESULTS • PERCEPTION SURVEY RESULT: • OVERALL AWARENESS LEVEL - 96% • ROAD TRAFFIC IS A NUISANCE- 97% • DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS ON HEALTH - 95%

  11. RESULTS PNS – Philippine Noisel Standard dB - Decibels

  12. RECOMMENDATIONS • Adopt new set of noise standards • Enforcement and monitoring of noise standards • Educational programs on proper drivers’ behavior • Provide noise abatement facilities and measures
