  5. It Is Not That Hard… • Hazardous Conditions • Unsafe Actions • What Is Your Experience • What About Your Accidents • Clear violations of OSHA rules, or • Carelessness/Stupidity • System Failures are common

  6. What Is a System Failure? • Conflicting Instruction • Safety is #2 • Poor Subcontractor Selection/Mgmt • Some Incentive Programs • Some Bonus Programs • Improper Goals

  7. Stop Worrying About OSHA • Which costs more: • OSHA Citation • Back Injury • OSHA cannot regulate human behavior • Is it just a matter of embarrassment • Prevent accidents and OSHA goes away

  8. Let’s Rethink Our Approach • The Safety Cop mentality cannot work • We have to change behavior, but • Can we change employee behaviors? • Can we change supt. behaviors? • Can we change owner behaviors?

  9. Employees First… • What are we talking about • OSHA Rates • Safety Violations • Training Initiatives • OSHA Rules • Best Practices • This is fine, but still…

  10. Owners and Superintendents… • OSHA Rates • Audit Results • New Regulations • Industry Comparisons • Accident Information • Citation Feedback • This is fine, but still…

  11. What Can We Do For Ourselves? • Get clarity at the top • Learn new languages • Lose the Safety Cop mentality • Focus on results AND activities • Pick your battles carefully • Modify your training • Watch for System Failures

  12. For Executives… • Challenge them to be better • Develop an Executive Safety Committee • Apply SQP concept • Avoid programs designed to fail • Measure effectively ($$$) • Provide regular performance feedback • Implement Accountability programs

  13. For Superintendents… • Accept responsibility • Be consistent • Make the most of toolbox talks • Maximize planning • Go over how they will be measured • Post job evaluations
