  5. The Spark • Assassination Sparks a Crisis • June 1914 – Archduke Francis Ferdinand (heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary) was visiting Sarajevo (capital of Bosnia) • At the time, Bosnia was part of the E. European empire ruled by Austria-Hungary

  6. The Spark • Ferdinand’s visit angered members of the Black Hand: Serbian terrorist group • Terrorist: uses threats and violence to promote a cause • The Black Hand wanted Bosnia to break away from Austria-Hungary & join Serbia

  7. The Spark June 28: Archduke & wife rode through Sarajevo in an open car Terrorist Gavrilo Princip shot the couple

  8. Alliance Against Alliance Austria Hungary quickly accused the Serbian gov’t of organizing the archduke’s assassination
