  1. PARTY PATROL

  2. Michigan State students do their fair share of “spartying”, but are police implemented laws affecting how students party? Living in a house in a college town comes with a lot of responsibility. Noise violations and party liter fines are plausible consequences when hosting a party. But students are realizing that they may also be putting themselves at risk of being evicted.

  3. MacGregor Olson, a senior Studying interpersonal communication at MSU. “It’s to the point where I don’t even want to have any group of friends over to drink.” said Olson. “Small gatherings always turn into raging parties.”

  4. PARTY SMART • As a courtesy, let your neighbors know you are having a party. • Pick up trash on your lawn immediately following the party. • Prohibit underage drinking. • The party host is liable for anything that happens as a result of their party. East Lansing’s police website offers a PDF file called PartySmart. In this document one can find frequently broken laws, and tips on how to avoid receiving any citations while partying.

  5. Melanie Dennis, Pre Law major at Michigan State. Melanie is in the process of getting a house for the next school year. In her interview she expresses some of the nerves she is experiencing prior to signing a lease.

  6. Contract Consequences Upon renting a house students are required to sign a leasing agreement. Local reality companies are familiar with city ordinances and expect their renters to abide by said laws. There is usually a section in the agreement that establishes the number of violations a tenant may receive before facing possible eviction.

  7. Anna Ricelli, Junior and president of Alpha Chi Omega at MSU. Anna is leasing a house through SRP reality come next fall. She has read through the leasing agreement thoroughly, and is worried that eviction is listed as a consequence. In her interview, Anna talks about how she plans to abide by the rules of her contract.

  8. Scott Lee, a senior studying business at MSU, is one of five roommates living in a CRMC house. “Unfortunately we have gotten two noise violations,” Said Lee. “As a house we need to refrain from getting a third which could break our lease and result in eviction.”

  9. Learning to Obey A percentage of the students I interview did admit to being guilty of violating one law or another while either hosting a party. They expressed that knowing that breaking the law and/or their agreements could result in them being evicted has caused them to be more cautious.

  10. Mike Burchi, MSU senior and roommate to previously interviewed Scott Lee. “The only way to completely avoid complications is to eliminate having people at our house, I guess we’ll have to socialize at the bar.”
