  4. What Tobacco Smoke Contains • Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 substances. More than 50 of these are linked to cancer. • Substances that cause cancer are called carninogens. 1.-One substance tobacco contains is nicotine. Nicotine is a poison. In fact, in the past it was used to kill insects. • Nicotine speeds up the nervous system. • It also makes the blood vessels smaller. As a result the heart must work harder to move blood throught the body.

  5. What Tobacco Smoke Contains 2.-Tobacco contains a posinous gas calledcarbonmonoxide. This gas takesthe place of oxygen in theblood. A littlecarbonmonoxidemakesyoutired. 7. Long-Term Effects of Using Tobacco • The respiratory system is the body system that is harmed the most by smoking tobacco. Breathing in tobacco smoke over and over again irritates the nose, throat, trachea, and lungs. • Eventually, these irritations cause smokers to cough a lot. • Smokers are much more likely to die of chronic bronchitis and emphysema than nonsmokers.

  8. 1.-Chronic Bronchitis • Starts with a buildup of tar in respiratory system. The buildup causes the breathing tubes leading to the lungs to produce excess mucus to swell. This makes it hard for the person to breathe.

  9. 2.-Emphysema • Destroys the tiny air sacs in the lungs. When these air sacs are destroyed, it takes longer for the lungs to do their job. • People with emphysema have a hard time breathing. Often they can’t get enough oxygen to exercise or even walk short distances.

  10. 3.-Lung Cancer • Is the disease most people relate to smoking. Cancer destroys healthy tisuue and organs. The longer a person smokes cigarettes, the more likely he or she is to get lung cancer. • Smokers are also at risk of getting cancer of the mouth, esophagus, larynx, throat, and digestivesystem.

  11. 4.-Heart Dieases • Heart diseases caused by smoking kill people every year. Chemicals in cigarette smoke make the heart work faster and harder. Smokers are four times more likely to die of heart disease than are nonsmokers.
