  1. Leading Toward Tomorrow Development of strong Unit Based Council and building of staff moral and ownership Presented By: Sheila Lucas Metro Health Hospital

  2. Problem Statement • Poor staff moral and ownership in profession among all disciplines on unit • Poor attendance and participation in Unit Based Council • How can leadership mentor and encourage staff in their profession and increase staff satisfaction?

  3. Background Summary • UBC poorly lead – trivial items brought forward (not UBC appropriate) • Causing UBC to be poorly attended and not seen as a useful tool for nursing staff • Leadership was making a lot of the decisions that should have been brought forward for UBC to make • Staff felt like they were not being “backed up” by decisions management were making

  4. Goals and Objectives • Goal is to increase UBC attendance and participation in unit decisions/projects thus increasing Unit moral and professional ownership

  5. Current Status/Results • Increased the number of staff allowed to be on UBC from 5 to 8 • Do not currently have 8 members but working on this • New UBC Chair • Helped flow of meetings and weed out unnecessary agenda items • UBC involved in more projects • Developed new white boards for pt rooms, developed individual peer interview matrix for each discipline, direct involvement in transition to full unit pyxis use, trials on better times for aides to do vitals, PDSA for med events • Would like to have members pair up and work on an education project to share with unit • Future project collaborating with unit social worker
