  2. Classification • Kingdom: Animalia • Phylum: Chordata (animal with vertebrae) • Class: Chondrichthyes (cartilage skeleton) • Order: Rajiformes (flat surface) • Species: 500- 700

  3. Animals related • Sting Rays • Sharks • Hammerhead Sharks

  4. Habitats • Native to the Atlantic, Pacific & Indian Ocean • Found in tropical to cold temperatures • And where rivers meet the ocean

  5. Movement • Gracefully undulating modified pectoral fins • Gliding

  6. Feeding • Eating sessile invertebrates or excavating prey • Small organisms like crabs, lobsters, amphipods, isopods, and mysids • Worms, bivalve mollusks, and small fish • Hard shelled invertebrates like snails • They have jaws

  7. Circulation/Respiration • gill slits that are often reduced or absent in fast swimming sharks   • five to seven pairs of gill slits are located the bottom side of the head • 2 chambered heart

  8. reproduction • Skates lay eggs in egg cases (mermaid’s purses) • They develop very slowly and can live up to 50 years

  9. Nervous system • Ampullae of Lorenzini(jelly-filled pores on face w/ nerve fibers) • Nostrils: openings of the olfactory organs located on the ventral portion of the snout • Eyes

  10. Interesting facts • Wings are edible • Diamond shaped and flat • Range in length from about few inches to 8 feet • U.S. uses for fertilizer and fish meal not food
