  3. SYNOPSIS • How every teacher can be a CCE teacher when they make use of the context of daily lessons of various disciplines to inculcate values. • Share sample lesson plans to show how teachers use the academic content to seize teachable moments in teaching values and skills.

  4. LEARNING OBJECTIVES • Learn how to inculcate values across thecurriculum and seize teachable moments through the context of different disciplines. • Glean ideas on how to integrate values and skills into weekly lessons planning • Get a hands-on experience on how values and skills can be taught using the content of academic subjects.

  5. QIFA CCE Framework

  6. BACKGROUND • When teachers reinforce values in their subject, pupils are able to understand how knowledge, skills, values and attitudes can be lived out. • This helps to contextualise the pupils’ learning of values implicitly and explicitly within a values-rich environment.

  10. LESSON PLANNING@QIFA • Every teacher is encouraged to infuse CCE values and skills in planning their lessons. • Teachers refer to the CCE toolkit and the SOW (Scheme of Work) for each academic subject. • See attached sample weekly lesson plan

PRIMARY 5 ENGLISH LESSON A passage from P5 Stellar Unit: “Late but not Last” Lesson objectives: • Construct meaning from given text • Infer and draw conclusions about characters and their actions in given text • Ways to structure interview questions with the use of formal tone and appropriate manner

  13. PRIMARY 5 ENGLISH LESSON CCE Learning Outcome: • Develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve personal well-being and effectiveness. (LO1) Knowledge: Understand that diligent practice is necessary to realise one’s potential Skill: Goal Setting Value: Resilience Attitude: Belief in one’s competence

  14. PRIMARY 5 ENGLISH LESSON Main character in the passage: MrKunalan Knowledge: Diligent practice led to his success Skill: Set goals for himself Value: Overcame challenges to bring glory to Singapore (Resilience) Attitude: Developed coping strategies to adapt to changes

  16. PRIMARY 6 MATHEMATICS LESSON Topic: Ratio Lesson objective: • Differentiate the different types of ratio questions by identifying the entity that has remained constant

PRIMARY 6 MATHEMATICS LESSON Pupils watched a video based on the following context: A group of pupils were trying to compete with one another in collecting the most number of Fruitty and Veggie cards given out during recess to reward them for eating vegetables and fruits. Examples of different types of ratio questionswere illustrated in the different scenarios.

  18. PRIMARY 6 MATHEMATICS LESSON CCE Learning Outcome: • Develop social awareness and demonstrate interpersonal skills to build and maintain positive relationships (LO3) Knowledge: Positive relationship Skill: Perspective taking Value: Caring for others’ needs Attitude: Empathy

PRIMARY 6 MATHEMATICS LESSON • Pupils were asked to put themselves into Dino’s shoes and discuss why Dino was upset. • They shared their thoughtsabout Dino’s character through his action. • Through the scenario, the teacher taught the students how to help Dino solve his problem using ratios and, at the same time, used the lesson to teach CCE values.

PRIMARY 4 SCIENCE LESSON Topic: Life Cycle of Animals Lesson objective: To observe the changes at different stages in the life cycle of a mealworm beetle Activity: Group Work: Each group is tasked to take care of a few mealworms, observe their changes and record their observations over a period of 2 weeks.

PRIMARY 4 SCIENCE LESSON CCE Learning Outcome: Develop social awareness and demonstrate interpersonal skills to build and maintain positive relationships (LO3) Knowledge: Responsibility towards one’s environment Skill: Relationship management Value: Responsibility towards others Attitude: Humility in interacting with others

  23. PRIMARY 4 SCIENCE LESSON Observation of pupils’ behaviour: • Through this Science activity, pupils practisedresponsibility in keeping the mealworms alive. • Pupils learned to work together as a team.

  28. CHALLENGES • Initial buy-in of infusing values into lesson planning was not easy. • It is difficult to infuse CCE values into some subjects (e.g., mathematics).

  29. MOVING FORWARD • Integrate school values and CCE values into the lessons • Creating a platform for the sharing of good lessons amongst staff • Level teachers to make use of Professional Development Time (PDT) to work as a team to look for more avenues to infuse CCE values and skills into their daily teaching content
