  1. The Difference Between Automatic and Manual Movement Watches The kinetic energy in our wrists is used to power automatic movements. A quartz crystal vibrates at 32,768 pulses per second and transmits them to a stepping motor. The stepping motor sends those pulses to the dial train, which then moves the hands of a mechanical movement watch. This process continues for a number of hours until the watch stops running. A mechanical movement watch has two main types: automatic and manual. Automatic movements, contain all of the parts of a manual movement, with the exception of the mainspring. The rotor is usually a semi-circular metal weight, which swings freely around the wrist. The rotor is connected to the gear train by a series of gears, which in turn wind the mainspring. Both automatic and manual movements contain similar mechanisms and can be wound either manually or automatically from the crown. Another difference between quartz and mechanical movement watches is their daily variations. Because the Earth is gravitationally pulled around the Earth, mechanical movements can lose a few seconds during the day. Quality pieces are tested to ensure accuracy, but a typical mechanical men's watch movement must stay within -4/-6 seconds per day to be classified as a chronometer. When you're shopping for a men's watch, make sure it has been tested by an independent chronometer testing institute. The individual parts of a mechanical watch movement are located between two plates. The front plate sits just behind the face, while the back plate is typically full, 3/4, or a series of smaller plates. Various parts of a mechanical movement watch are easily accessible with the use of a bridge. If you don't want to remove the watch's face to see the movement, you can also use a ratchet mechanism. The main advantages of a mechanical movement watch are practical and aesthetic. Mechanical watches do not need to be replaced or cleaned as frequently as an electronic one. They also do not need batteries, and can even last a lifetime. Mechanical movements are also often dirtier than other types of watches and require lubrication on a regular basis. Clean them every three to five years for optimum performance. You'll be surprised at how much money mechanical watches are worth. Manual movements are the oldest type of watch movements. These require winding regularly in order to keep accurate time. The drive is provided by the mainspring, which looks like a coil of stiff wire inside the movement. Winding a manual watch increases the tension on the mainspring, which then transmits energy to a gear train to move the hands around the face of the timepiece. The mainspring is the heart of the mechanical movement. When winding a manual movement watch, the mainspring is wound. The balance wheel is the final part of the mechanism that controls the hands. Some watch enthusiasts prefer manual movements because they require less care. In addition to that, a manual watch is more expensive than an automatic one. Despite the higher price, some gentlemen like the extra heft that manual movements offer. Hence, the price is usually higher for
