  3. Today's Objectives • Describe the meaning of market forces • Show how they effect the trading climate

  4. Definition • Jeeves says market forces are: • “The interaction of supply and demand that shapes a market economy”

  5. Developments • Throughout time developments have occurred in technology that change human life: • Invention of the wheel • Weapons • Radio • Etc.

  6. Developments • Create a list of technological developments you feel are important • Not just computer ones !

  7. Developments • Pick one technological development from your list and draw a picture of it. • Write down why it is important

  8. Development Effects • How has your technological development effected the business market and society ?

  9. Human Changes • New technologies have changed the way humans do things. • Food Example: • The Fridge an Freezer have reduced shopping trips • Cars have allowed people to travel at will, allowing for large out of town supermarkets • The Microwave has reduced the time required to cook food

  10. Market forces at work • People want low cost, convenience and choice, they will go to the place they feel can provide it best. • Large stores open and the trade to local stores reduces. This is a shift in trade from one company to another and shows market forces at work.

  11. New Technologies • When a new technology becomes established business will want to use it to improve trade, the recent example being the internet. • If consumers or businesses want to use the internet for trade then a new channel has been opened to sell and buy good/services.

  12. Not on the internet • What will happen if a company does not trade via the internet and the competitors or customers do ? • Pressures of the market (market forces) have lead to almost all companies having a internet presence. Even companies that did not specifically want to be involved.

  13. How do market forces effect us ? • How have you as an individual had your life improved by market forces ? • Market forces have lead to most things, if there is a need for something, someone will usually develop it. • Security on the internet is not required for it to work, but market forces require that companies have a secure way to make transactions.

Shopping Cart Systems • Most major retailing sites will use a shopping cart/trolley system. • Investigate such systems on the internet and find one that you could use to trade on the internet. • Many systems will cost money, others will be free, what particular aspects are you looking for when choosing ?
