  1. ITSWAP - European project Intelligent Transport Systems over Wireless Application Protocol

  2. Project Objectives • Establish the technical and commercial feasibility of ITS services provided over Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). • Contributing to the development of innovative services • Deliver Internet-like traffic information to mobile users • Testing WAP as a possible ITS platform for service providers and car industry

  3. The Consortium • Telecom operators: Telia (Sweden), Telecom Italia Mobile (Italy), France Telecom (France), Orange (UK) - sponsor • Car manufacturers: Volvo (Sweden), Renault (France), Fiat (Italy), BMW (Germany) • Service providers: Mannesmann TeleCommerce (Germany), Webraska (France), Mizar (Italy), ITIS (UK) • Data suppliers: National Assembly of Wales (UK), ATM (Italy), SUS (Italy), ASM (Italy), Ferrovia dello Stato (Italy) • Terminal manufacturers: Nokia (Germany), Ericsson (Sweden), Magneti Marelli (Italy) • Others: ERTICO (Belgium), TNO (Netherlands), SODIT (France), TRG (UK), ICC (UK), INFRACOM (Italy)

  4. Demonstration Sites • France • Italy • Sweden • Wales

  5. (T+2) (T+7) End of sites (T+23) Feedback from sites Final Evaluation results (T+23) Start January 2000 T+12 T+18 T+24 T+6 Planning Services requirements Services specifications Field trials Evaluation

  6. System Architecture

  7. MASTER • Software tool meant to process counting data for urban or road traffic. • Offers a large range of functions for traffic data analysis: curves, graphs, temporal series, statistics, classification, correction of errors. • Essential for upstream pre-processing of signal or information control systems.

  8. System Architecture

  9. MAITRE • Enables to follow up in REAL TIME road traffic conditions • Can be used even on non-equipped networks, where counting traffic data are not available. • Essential for forecast of traffic conditions in a city • Fits into the global chain of real-time traffic data processing

  10. System Architecture

  11. SITTI: Traffic Information on Internet • Selection of: • Origin (different poles: North, South, East, South-East etc.) • Destination • Optimisation criteria: time, distance, comfort • Search and display of an optimal itinerary under a graphic form taking into account REAL TIME traffic conditions. • Demo site: www-sodit.onecert.fr/sitti

  12. Traffic Information via Internet

  13. System Architecture

  14. WAPITI : On-Trip Information • Selection of: • Origin (different poles: North, South, East, South-East, Highways, etc.) • Destination • Optimisation criteria: time, distance, comfort • Search and display of an optimal itinerary

  15. ITSWAP - French Site : Toulouse • Cartography with traffic information (car only) • Route sheet with traffic influence • Public transport information

  16. Toulouse: on-trip traffic information • Selection of a location (North, South, East, South-East, Highways, etc.) • Display of Traffic information: • Text form • Traffic status on main axes • Classified (congestion, heavy traffic, …)

  17. On-Trip Information and rerouting

  18. Heavy Traffic Congested Traffic Direction On-Trip Traffic Information Display

  19. Bus info in Toulouse • Selection of: • bus line • bus direction (from or to the city center) • bus stop • Real Time information returned: • bus approaching or not • waiting time for the next 3 buses

  20. Dynamic Timetable StaticTimetable Bus Information Display

  21. SODIT

  22. SODIT Activities and know-howin traffic and transportation domains • Expertise studies for road and urban networks • Simulation and assessment studies • Development of software tools • Automatic transport systems • Organisation of courses and seminars • Management of European projects

  23. SODIT know-how in trafficand linked products • Simulation : micro or macroscopic simulation products (SITRA, SIMRES, INTEGRATION) • Traffic control : analysis and control software for urban traffic (MAITRE) • Management : studies of assessment strategies • Information : comparative studies of different information systems

  24. ITS Applications • Real time traffic products: • MAITRE: traffic condition calculation • MASTER: traffic counting data analysis • M’ROAD: best roads calculation • Traffic information dedicated to end-users • SITTI: traffic information via Internet • WAPITI: traffic information via WAP
