  1. Colonial Government

  2. How did Government form in the Colonies? • As religion grew in the Colonies, so did government. • In Carolina, the Lords Proprietors formed a group called the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina. • The Lords Proprietors were wealthy people from England

  3. How did the FCC work? • It gave them the right to appoint a governor to rule the colony. • Male colonists who owned at least 50 acres of land were allowed to vote on assembly members. • These assembly members passed the laws of the colony.

  4. How effective was the government? • The government had a hard time keeping control. • The goals of the government were to make English merchants rich and powerful. • Colonists didn’t like this; they went to America for freedom!

  5. Ashley Cooper helped write the FCC

  6. What strategies were used? • The Proprietors would send “leaders” to keep the colonists under control, but they often failed. • Most governors lasted only 2 or 3 years before leaving or being driven out.

  7. What was Culpepper’s Rebellion? • An armed battle between the colonists and Proprietors in 1677. • It was fought over The Navigation Acts, which said colonists needed to ship products to England directly.

  8. What happened in the rebellion? • John Culpepper led a group of colonists against the governors and overtook them. • They captured Thomas Miller, the head governor at the time. • The Proprietors sent another man to govern, but he was captured by pirates.

  9. Write your summary. • Pretend you are a colonist who has been assigned to write a letter to the Proprietors describing why you won’t follow their orders. Write a letter explaining why you want your freedom and won’t fold under their control.
