  1. Chapter 4 The Human World

  2. Section I. World Population • By the end of 2011 we will have 7 BILLION people on earth -roughly 1 billion every 12 years • Latinos are growing in numbers • 2010 = 49.7 million • 2050 = 132.8 million • By 2050 3 out of every 10 persons in the US will be Latinos

  3. A. Population Growth • How fast the world population is growing • What factors affect population growth? • Demographics • Demography

  4. **Growth Rates • Death rate – the # of deaths per year for every 1000 people • Birthrate – the # of births per year for every 1000 people • Natural increase (growth rate) – the difference bw an area’s death rate and birthrate

  5. **Death Rates • Death rates are lower in more developed countries because of – • Improved health care • More abundant food supplies • Advances in technology • Better living conditions

  6. **Zero Population Growth • Sometimes in wealth industrialized countries you reach ‘Zero population growth’ • When death rate and birthrate are equal • What is a NEGATIVE effect of zero population growth?

  7. **Birthrate • High birthrate is seen in undeveloped countries such as those seen in Africa • Typically tied to religious views • What NEGATIVE effect does high birth rate have?

  8. **Doubling time • High birthrates and low death rates greatly increases population growth • Doubling time – the number of years it takes a population to double in size • Usually occurs in developing countries • Ex: Africa – 25yrs • EX: US – 300 yrs

  9. **Challenges of Population growth • What are NEGATIVE effects of Population Growth? • Need for food • Overuse of limited resources • Uneven distribution by age • What are POSITIVE effects of Population Growth? • Increase of technology and creativity

  10. **Negative population growth • When the death rate is higher than the birthrate of that country • What NEGATIVE effects does negative population growth have? • Economic consequences • Difficult to find workers • Clash of cultures

  11. B. Population distribution • Pattern of human settlement is uneven • People live where the following are available • Fertile soil • Water • Climate w/o harsh extremes • Terrain that allows for human life • In areas where population is highly concentrated, people tend to live in metropolitan areas

  12. **population density • How crowded a country or a region is measured by population density • Is it good to have high population density?

  13. **Population movement • Migration – movement of people from place to place • Urbanization – when people move into cities • Emigration v. Immigration

  14. Push – pull factors • No Jobs • War • Food shortages • Persecution • Poverty • Available jobs and opportunities • Religious freedom • Political freedom • Hope • Land Push Factors Pull Factors

  15. Immigration • What are some common themes that we see in El Paso when it comes to immigrants?

  16. C. Population pyramids (Age-Sex graph) • Useful tool to help you understand population characteristics of a country • Reveals a lot about a countries patterns of fertility, mortality, immigration and history • Population Pyramid

  17. pyramid • Usually seen in underdeveloped countries • High birthrates • Young life expectancy

  18. Column • Developed country • Roughly the same birthrate and death rate • What else can you interpret?

  19. Column • More females than males • Low birthrate

  20. Create your ownpopulation pyramid
