Construction Inspectors Typical Duties Inspect contractors on site and record in diaries Record materials being used on site, and ensure they are approved to be used on site Mark out removals for contractor Measure items being placed that day and recording them properly. Traffic Inspections Erosion Control Inspections Materials Testing

  6. Daily Inspectors Diary • Proper Documentation • Date • Weather • Contractor(s) On Site • Men (Foreman, Operator, Laborer) • Equipment (Make & Model) • Hours of Men & Equipment • Work Performed • Be specific with locations/times • Record Important Conversations

Daily Inspectors Diary • Proper Documentation • Do not skimp on content • Initial or sign each diary entry • If you are recording trucks – note truck numbers and companies • Make sure paper diaries have page numbers and easy reference back to diary. • Enter your diaries into Fieldmanager or Fieldbook • You can enter more than one contractor in each electronic diary.

Measuring • Check Miscellaneous Quantities (MQ’s)for Required Unit of Measurement • Examples: LF, EACH, TON, SF, LB, DAY, CWT, LS, CY, SY, ACRE, GAL, MGAL • Measure Material Placed on Project • Use Proper Device for the Job • Measuring Wheel • Tape Measures (25 ft &150 ft) • Folding Stick Rule

  9. Recording Record Measurements on Statewide Spreadsheets (Pantry 2014) or in Daily Diaries (Green Sheet Examples) Some Calculations May Need to be Drawn on Engineering Paper Be as Accurate as Possible Rounding Errors are Common Have Someone Check Your Work Keep ALL source documents

  10. Traffic Inspections Traffic control should be inspected continuously, but more formally once a week. Traffic Control Inspection Checklist in Pantry. Federal Highways random check-ups check for documented proof of Traffic Inspections.

  13. Remember . . . There is no formal procedure, just required information and source documentation Can use diaries, Fieldmanager or combo – just need to reference source documents. Work with the contractor but don’t be afraid to say no.
