  1. Learning Target and IB Standards • Students will learn the rhetorical tools and elements of language necessary for an opening paragraph for essays and speeches. • O1: Create work that employs organizational structures and language-specific conventions throughout a variety of text types. (ELA10W1) • 02: Organize ideas and arguments in a sustained, coherent, and logical manner. (ELA10W1, ELA10W2) • 03: Employ appropriate “critical apparatus” (ELA10W1) • “Critical Apparatus” is defined as proper usage of Tools of Rhetoric.

  2. Every opening paragraph must have three identifiable parts in this order: • Topic Sentence(s) • “Vehicle Statement” • Thesis Statement

  3. TOPIC SENTENCE “VEHICLE” THESIS STATEMENT

  4. The Topic Sentence! • A Topic Sentence introduces your topic without being too confrontational – it has to be something that all readers or listeners, regardless of opinion, should agree with even if they didn’t read your book or see the movie – it shouldn’t mention your book or movie at all. = NO! • Example: “For many Americans, economic stability remains one of the most important goals in life.” = YES! Name the Tool of Rhetoric being used in Topic Sentences…

  5. The Vehicle Statement • Your “Vehicle Statement” is the object that you plan on using to prove your topic and argument to be valid; it can be a book, a movie, a philosophy, an essay, or even you.. Thesis Statement Topic Sentence • Vehicle Example: In John Steinbeck’s masterpiece novel Of Mice and Men the drive for economic stability is the center-point of the lives of almost all characters.

  6. So far… • “For many Americans, economic stability remains one of the most important goals in life… In John Steinbeck’s masterpiece novel Of Mice and Men the drive for economic stability is the center-point of the lives of almost all characters….”

  7. The Thesis Statement! • Your Thesis Statement is the product of a simple mathematical equation: • “Topic Sentence” + “Vehicle Statement” + “Your Argument” = “Your Thesis Statement” IDEAS!!! • Thesis Example:IT CAN BE ARGUED THAT while economic stability is a major part of American life, what we call The American Dream, this desire often leads to some of the most difficult decisions in a person’s life – as depicted in most characters within Of Mice and Men. YOUR THESIS STATEMENT!

  8. All Three Parts Together (the “skeleton” for an opening paragraph): • For many Americans, economic stability remains one of the most important goals in life… In John Steinbeck’s masterpiece novel Of Mice and Men the drive for economic stability is the center-point of the lives of almost all characters… IT CAN BE ARGUED THAT while economic stability is a major part of American life, what we call The American Dream, this desire often leads to some of the most difficult decisions in a person’s life as depicted in most characters within Of Mice and Men.

  9. Simplified • TOPIC SENTENCE: Animals are the greatest thing in the world. • VEHICLE: The greatest of all animals is the pony. • THESIS STATEMENT:IT CAN BE ARGUED THAT… when a person looks at a pony, it is obvious that they are the greatest of all animals because they are so beautiful.

  10. Student Example: • TOPIC SENTENCE: In his 1996 speech to Cambridge University, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama stated, “We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection. ” (Albers 132). • VEHICLE: The characters of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men live in a world without religion and meditation, but deep within each character are different levels of human affection. • THESIS STATEMENT: IT CAN BE ARGUED THAT… the various levels of human affection, the key to each character’s happiness within the novel Of Mice and Men, can be found within their ability to display human affection.

  21. Directions • In a one-minute speech persuade the producers of a reality show to cast you as one of the “character profiles” they are looking for. • Use tools of rhetoric and the organization of a written opening paragraph to construct an argument in speech form. • You have one-minute to convince the producers to cast you in the role.

  22. Use the graphic organizer to construct your one-minute try out speech. Be prepared to try out for the reality show TODAY. Use your real name! 23. HOMEWORK! • You must take your parent persuasion speeches and rewrite the opening paragraph to have a Topic Sentence (with explanation), and Vehicle Statement (with explanation), and your Thesis Statement. • If you received a “0” on the Parent Persuasion Speech, you are rewriting the whole thing until you get a “10” – see me if needed. • We start prepping for the Unit One Summative next week.
