  3. What are Standardized Tests? • A test given under controlled conditions specifying where, when, how, and how long the test will be taken. • Established format • Specific instructions for teachers and students

  4. Why Use Standardized Tests? • Curriculum improvement • State accreditation • Achievement • Preparation • No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 • AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) • Accountability • Federal Funding

  7. Virginia SOL Tests • Must meet the Virginia SOLs • Measure achievement • English (3rd-8th) • Math (3rd-8th) • Science (3rd, 5th, 8th , and end of high school courses) • History/Social Studies (3rd, 5th, 8th, and end of high school courses)

  8. Who takes the SOLs? • All students in tested grades and classes. • Grades 3-8 and high school students • Accommodations or Alternative Assessments • Students with disabilities • Limited English proficient students • www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/participation/index.shtml
