  7. National Board Certification… Teacher-driven Practicing classroom teachers: • Serve on the NBPTS Board of Directors • Develop the standards • Score the assessments • Promote National Board Certification • Provide candidate support • Advocate related education reforms

  8. NBPTS Five Core Propositions Teachers are committed to students and their learning. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. Teachers are members of learning communities.

  9. National Board Certification Applicants must have: • At least three years’ experience as a preK-12 classroom teacher or school counselor in a public or private school • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution • A valid teaching license or a license to practice as a school counselor

  10. Is this a National Credential? • State licensing or credentialing systems set entry-level standards for novice teachers. • National Board Certification establishes advanced standards for experienced teachers. • Portability in most states.

  13. The Process • A four-part portfolio of classroom teaching practice • A six-part assessment of content knowledge administered at a testing center National Board Certification can take one to three years to complete—and consists oftwo major components:

  15. Scoring • Ten weighted scores • 4 portfolio entries • 6 assessment center prompts • You may “bank” scores for two years and retake parts for a pro-rated fee.

  16. Due Dates • 2008-09 Cycle • Application: Jan 1, 2008-Dec 31, 2008 • Portfolio: March 31, 2009 • Assessment: June 15, 2009 • 2009-10 Cycle (est.) • Application: Jan 1, 2009-Dec 31, 2009 • Portfolio: March 31, 2010 • Assessment: June 15, 2010

Candidate Fees • Nonrefundable Application Processing Fee:  $65 Due: When application is submitted. • Nonrefundable Initial Fee:  $500 (applied to the total assessment fee) Due: No later than December 31, 2008* • Balance of Assessment Fee:  $2,000 ($2500 total)Due: No later than January 31, 2009- OR - Due: No later than March 15, 2009, if you participate in the Extended Payment Plan

Who is Eligible for Take One!? • Educators with access to a preK-12 classroom • Teachers • Pre-service teachers • Principals • Administrators • Professors in colleges of education • Cost is $395, score valid for 2 years • PTDC at CSU Fullerton offers support for cohorts of 10 or more participants. 21

Teachers benefit… National Board Certification: • Strengthens teaching practice and improves student learning • Increases financial opportunities for teachers in many states and districts • Provides a portable teaching license in most states • Contributes to Continuing Education Units (CEU)/ re-certification requirements • Recognizes accomplished teachers
