Institutional AdvancementFoundation and Corporate Relations • Located within the Office of Institutional Advancement, FCR develops and maintains long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with foundations and corporations whose missions align with that of Drexel University. FCR also serves as an internal resource for faculty and administrators seeking to build external support networks with foundations, businesses, and large corporations. • Key Functions • Support – Do you have programming, research or equipment needs? • Planning– Do you have a plan for approaching funders for your project? • Coordination – Do you have partners on campus or in the community? • Is the Office of Research Administration involved in your project? Institutional AdvancementFoundation and Corporate Relations • SUPPORT: How FCR Can Help You • Strategizing and coordinating corporate and foundation interface and support • Informing faculty and administrators of available opportunities through monthly RFP email distribution and listings on the FCR website • Researching potential funders and facilitating internal/external partnerships • Reviewing, revising, and editing proposals and LOIs prior to submission to be sure • they are aligned with foundation interests and follow the recommended format • Ensuring timely grant submissions and reporting to funders • Coordinating site visits and conference calls March 2013

Current Foundation Interests • Engagement with the community – nonprofit organizations, civic • groups, government agencies, researchers at other universities • Proven track record of success – established research results or • programmatic outcomes • Model programs that can be replicated – benefits not limited to one • geographic location, “best practice” models for national dissemination • Measurable outcomes – focus on evaluation, providing a “return” on • philanthropic investment • Restrictions – geographic footprint, no unsolicited proposals, existing relationships, • number of accepted proposals, personnel limitations Institutional AdvancementFoundation and Corporate Relations March 2013

Institutional AdvancementFoundation and Corporate Relations • Review of Funding Requests by Foundations • Program Officer – All proposals are reviewed by a foundation program officer and • then, in some cases, reviewed by experts or panels. The program officer is the • university’s key point of contact. This individual screens applications for consistency • with the foundation’s funding interests, contacts applicants for additional information, • arranges conference calls/site visits, facilitates the review process and sometimes makes funding recommendations to the Board of Trustees. • Board of Trustee Approval – All foundation awards must be approved by the • institution’s Board of Trustees. Foundation boards are diverse, and can include: relatives • of the individual who established the foundation, civic and business leaders, academic • experts, professional staff, and others. Institutional AdvancementFoundation and Corporate Relations • Proposal & Letter of Inquiry Submissions • Since July 1, 2012, Foundation and Corporate Relations has prepared nearly 200 proposals and • letters of inquiry. These have included submissions • to the The Pew Charitable Trusts, Claneil Foundation, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Independence Blue Cross, Lockheed Martin, and Shire Pharmaceuticals. March 2013
