Working in theInstructional Computing Labs • Instructor PC Lab password: z640 • Reactivate blank computer lab monitor screens by moving mouse or pressing the <ESC> key  • Types of Labs – Differ by access (Instructional or Open) and computer Operating System (OS: Win98, 2000, XP, & Mac) • Find out what’s where:http://its.PBJ.edu/newfaculty/labs-map/labs-map.html CT Fact: Currently there are over 30 labs on campus with approximately 450 computers. In 2002-3 we are supporting Labs with Windows 98,2000, XP and MacIntosh Operating Systems What Students need to use PC Labs (not Mac): • Student computers login to Hawkdom2 using a lowercase “s” followed by their 7-digit student ID number and their hawkmail password (first try default password: nmmdd where n= first letter of last name, mmdd=month and year of birth (2-digits each) • Logging-in will give students access to their Netscape email and the M drive.

Helping yourselfThe Care and Feeding of Your Computer ITS user support can help you learn how to: • Update/Use Virus Software • ScanDisk, Defragment • Backup files (to network, etc.) Note: We take care of the cleaning up and backing up of the lab computers and networks on a regular basis. Or, you may have simply run out of space on your Network Server - Call the Help Desk

  10. Some things you should know: • Is there a computer in your office? (if not – tell us) • How to access Network folders/files • How to save files from your computer to the Network (for file backup and e-mail access). • How to access your Network Files from a Multimedia Classroom / Instructional Lab. • Note/Disclaimer:Remember, the simpler the information, the less accurate it may be … Life Changes… So please be aware: • Macs do not (yet) have access to the PBJU Network for saving/accessing files. • Setup for access from Multimedia classrooms PCs are still being established. `

Some things you should know: Accessing the Network When your computer first boots up, you will see this Login box Do the following: • At login screen, type your user name [first initial and first 7 characters of your last name (all lowercase - example: jdoe)] • TAB to next field and type your password. (Initial account setup/password must be requested from the HelpDesk) • Your Assigned Network Server is known by your office computer but must be typed in when accessing from other computers. • Click the OK button or hit the Enter key. jdoe ******* You should now have access to your Network Server, e-mail(and perhaps a networkedprinter). To check e-mail, open your preferred program (Netscape, Outlook…)

Some things you should know: Saving Files to the Network • Open your “My Documents” Folder* • Open your “My Network Documents” Folder* • Select/Highlight the Documents you want to access. • Copy and Paste or DragandDrop the files from your computer into your network server space. Now you should be set to login from another computer and access your powerpoints, word documents and other files as needed. If you want to access files from elsewhere on campus (or simply back up files) do the following: * While not currently on most PC desktop images ITS user support staff can help set these folders up right on your computer’s main screen for easy access

Some things you should know:Accessing your Network Files from Multimedia Classrooms / Instructional Labs • Input Instructor PC password (z640) • Login to your Server - to access your files. • In a Lab you will have a 2nd Login to Hawkdom2 for printer access in a lab (Note: for this you must first request that a hawkmail account via the Help Desk) • Access your files through My Computers / MSOffice programs. Now you should be set to access your PowerPoints, Word documents and other files as needed. If you want to access your Network files from a multimedia classroom (if PC or laptop is available): Note: While all multimedia classrooms currently have laptop connections, Instructor PC Computers may not yet be installed

Working with Multimedia and Technology in the Classrooms • Portable Equipment for Classroom use: • Video (VHS) VCRs/Players • LCD Projectors • Laptop computers (for short-term use) • Video Camcorders • Slide Projectors • Cassette Players/Recorder • CD Player • Built into Multimedia Classrooms you have: • Video (VHS) Players/VCRs • Computer and/or Laptop Presentation access (Audio & Video) • Internet Access Note: Get keys to the classroom media lock boxes from your Department’s Administrative Assistant (they coordinate key distribution with Dr. Strawberry) To place orders for or report problems with classroom equipment: Call theHELP DESK CT Fact: About 85% of PBJ U Classrooms are currently multimedia-ready.

Courses that take place in class (maximizing use of interactive, participatory learning activities) Courses that utilize the web to enhance instruction courses in which the web is utilized for all aspects of instruction Description Session design, technique consideration, technology selection… Posting/scanning content, learning to use discussion boards, e-mail, grading, etc… Learning to use advanced features of WebCT to provide Instructor Feedback, post/ collect ssignments, develop online quizzes and tests… ITS Support Webct.PBJ.edu Support for Different Class Interaction Formats Face to Face Web Enhanced Fully Online (Apple) (Peach) Course Management Software supported: CT Fact: PBJ University offers approximately 10 -15 online courses and over 200 web enhanced courses per semester

PBJU Support for Technology Innovation • The University Instructional Technology Committee (UITC) solicits and considers faculty proposals for integrating and enhancing technology in teaching and learning on campus. Grant awards fall into three categories: • First time grants providing access to Laptops and/or software (for course development); • Follow-up grants providing access to hardware and/or software upgrades for advanced/expanded technology use; • Technology Mentoring grants for faculty interested in supporting faculty colleagues in their developing skills in and use of technology. The UITC solicits proposals from all full-time faculty via e-mail as funding is available.

ITS Faculty Resource Center ITS has a central conference area that we are setting up as a Faculty Resource Area – a space for you to come, learn and share instructional insights with each other. We will be collecting and developing teaching, learning and technology resources for this center. Drop in and visit anytime.
