  3. Partner Share • Teach your partner how a fish you eat in a restaurant has been gutted. • Explain to your partner how to use quartz and flint to start a fire. Be sure to use hand signals. • Teach your partner what you would need to have a blazing fire.

  4. Amazing Words • Pursuit- the act or pursuing or chasing • The dog was in hot pursuit of the cat. • Prey- animal that is hunted and killed for food by other animals • The lion hunted its prey across the plains.

  5. Word Analysis Compound words are made up of two words. • Headland • Pocketknife • Seashell • Firewood • shellfish

  6. Word Analysis Are these compound words? • Unhappy • Landslide • Resourceful • Preorder • Bookmark

  7. Vocabulary After studying so hard, Mary was gratified to see her test score. I can’t figure out what “gratified” means by using context clues, so I will use a dictionary or glossary. When I look up gratified in a dictionary, I see that it means “felt pleasure or satisfaction”. Now I understand that Mary was happy about her test score.

  8. Partner Read Read “Island Survival” on page 87. Use glossary or dictionary if necessary to understand the meaning of the highlighted words to know.

  9. Vocabulary Partner work: • Headland-A narrow piece of land that projects from a coastline into the sea • Lair- A wild animal's resting place, esp. one that is well hidden • Kelp- A large brown seaweed used as a source of various salts

  10. Vocabulary • Partner work: • gnawed- Bite at or nibble something persistently • Shellfish- seafood that has some type of shell covering them • Ravine- A deep, narrow gorge with steep sides.

  16. Conventions After I went to the play and I came home. After I went to the play : this clause is dependent because it does not express a complete thought I came home: this clause is independent because it can stand on its own

  17. Conventions Combine the clauses: After the whales died Nothing would be safe she used their bones until she built a fence
