  1. PDO NORM Management System Brett Young

  2. Defines responsibilities Est. Dose limits Inc. NORM Radiological Surveys into the PTW Training Transport and Storage Locations Emergency Procedures Incorporates NORM Management Guidelines Specification SP 1170 Version .3.0

  3. SP 1170 • PDO Policy • Plant that has conveyed or stored production fluids (water/oil) or gas are potentially NORM contaminated. • Dose Limits • 1 mSv/year for PDO workers & contractors • NORM Guideline CSM.001 provides guidance on action limits • Inhalation / Ingestions Limits • 5 cps above background - PPE

  4. NORM Management Guidelines • Based on Syrian Guidelines • “How to”….. guidelines • Inc. NRS in PTW for consistency of approach • Added flow charts for specific activities • Modified to include PDO’s meters

  5. HEMP - Permit To Work • Production oil/gas/water - conveyed/stored • Trips PTW which requires a NORM Radiological Survey (NRS) • Measurements conducted by RPT • Recorded and attached to PTW • NRS stipulates controls • e.g. PPE, Supervised/Controlled Areas.

  6. Example - Zauliyah • Measurements for Tank T7402 • Ground 5 μSv/hour (450 - 500 cps) exterior wall • At 50 cm above ground = 2.0 μSv/hr exterior wall • At 1.0 m above ground = 1.5 μSv/hr (125 cps) exterior wall • At 1.5 m above ground = 20 cps exterior wall Inside tank in centre approx. 15 - 20 μSv/hr Workers 4 hrs per day inside cleaning = 80 μSv/day 80 uSv/day x 14 (days) = 1120 μSv/2 weeks inside tank > 1 mSv/2 weeks

  7. NORM Radiological Survey √ 24372

  8. Example of NORM Survey Report Certificate No: 24372

  9. Monitoring of Personnel • Action Limit 1 μSv/hour • Record on NORM Radiological Survey • Attached to PTW • RPT estimates workers daily dose • > 8 μSv/day record into a database • Risk assessment - Tank cleaners and sludge farm operators required to wear TLD Badge

  10. Bahja NORM Storage facility 400 m Entrance * Concrete pad 100 m x 50 m Rest Room & Toilet 400 m gate 2 Pits Sludge Storage 100m*10m*1m depth Tubulars 50m x 25m Drum storage 50m x 25m Scrap metal 50m x 25m

  11. NORM Survey Proposal Reservoir to Min Al Fahal (MAF) • Oil/water/gas  wells  manifold/gathering station •  Main pumping station (MPS)  MAF tanks Survey Proposal • Survey backwards from MPS (dehydration tanks)  Gathering Stations (separators)  % well heads • Fields declared • Green (NORM Free) • Yellow (NORM Suspected) • Red (Known NORM) • Work back as to which geology, depth, water chemistry, E.O.R. programs are likely to produce NORM

  12. Further discussion Does PDO need dedicated Interior based RPS? How do other organisations consistently identify contaminated plant/areas? Do you use a PTW system or other? Are surveys a useful tool? Do you utilise a similar method or other than proposed?
