Preparation for Field EducationJeff Skinner Purposes 1.To socialize into the profession of social work. 2.To sensitize the student with realistic expectations. 3.To outline the major areas of field performance which require attention from the student. 4.To bolster student confidence in their experiential learning.

  2. Experiential Learning 1.Learning by doing and observing. 2.Thinking on your feet. 3.Reflecting and processing experiences. 4.An ongoing loop of thinking, feeling, acting, oberving,analyzing,correcting, improving, and critical self reflection. How?

  3. How? 1.With supervisor, with faculty liaison, with fellow students, with course assignments, and with yourself. 2.The learning is relational and not a solitary exercise. 3.The relational dimensions include yourself, your agency, your supervisor, your faculty liaison, your fellow students and…

  4. Most Importantly • Your clients!!!

  5. Starting with Good Habits • 1.Trust the process. • 2.Rely upon others to learn. This s a productive dependency. (Recall the relational aspects.) • 3.Reframe negative experiences into positive learning outcomes. • 4.Take initiative and responsibility. • 5.Challenge yourself.

  6. What the BSW faculty expect. 1.To be responsible in following the NASW Code of Ethics. 2.To participate in your field learning in an open, active, and professional manner. 3.To be open to ongoing constructive feedback about your field performance.

What we expect 4. …. and most importantly we expect you to be responsible to your clients. a) to practice SW in a disciplined manner commensurate with your skills, & abilities b) under the direction of your supervisor. c) to learn from your “mistakes” d) to identify problems early and to use the resources from the faculty liaison.

  8. What we expect 5. To take seriously the field learning contract. 6. To complete all evaluations with professional integrity. 7. To be helpful for each other in a beginning collegial manner.

  10. Overview of Requirements • 1.Professional Liability Insurance. • 2.Minimum of 280 clock field hours/semester. (No roll-over hours.) • 3.To complete the field service learning plan which parallels the learning outcomes of the BSW Professional Curriculum. • 4.To be familiar with the BSW Field Education Manual.

  11. More Requirements • 1.BSW Portfolio due in April. • 2.Save your course work! • 3.More to follow in your seminars.

  12. Assignments • 1.The “Preparation for Field Internship” which is due the third or fourth week of this semester. • 2.Completing this assignment requires you to take some initiative with your field instructor/supervisor as well as with others at your agency. • 3.The purpose of the assignment is to give you the opportunity to establish a firm foundation in your field education learning.
