  1. Retrograde to Prograde Document Management(Green Tools for Schools)IETC - Nov 29, 2012 Terence Sullivan Shiloh CUSD#1 tsulliva@gmail.com

  2. Retrograde • Moving Backward – typically applied to planets • Currently Jupiter is in Retrograde, meaning it is moving backward against the background stars • image • Jupiter is the evening star most of the winter and Wed, Nov 28 is in “conjunction” with the Moon all night

  3. Gutenberg “effect” • Since 1440 • Printing more and faster – maybe backwards? • DHS – Illinois study 2010 • 100 million pieces of paper were stored in manila folders • Printing cost $600,000 per month • Storage, paper, and printing a significant part of annual budget • Monk/Scrib video -

  4. Outline • Why – costs & typical school waste • What are PDF and ePub formats • Coming of the digital textbook and readers • Converting documents to PDF/ePub • Making “fillable” PDF documents • Manipulating, storing, organizing PDFs • Converting PDF back to Word, etc including converting “images” of text • Annotating PDF – grading and markup

  5. Paper Use • School Pages per child printed range from 1000 – 4000 pages per year • University study – 15-20% of printed pages never leave pint/copy area • Fact: To kill a tree only takes the equivalent of 2 cases of paper or 20 reams • 100 pounds of paper (2 cases) = 1 Tree 40 feet tall and 8 inches in diameter

  6. Costs • Cost per page from AU study: • http://www.bit.com.au/News/309070,laser-vs-inkjet-adding-up-the-cost.aspx • Color Laser – 12 cent page • Mono Laser – 4 cent page • Inkjet/color – 30 cent page • (mono 4-10; color 9-28; photo 20-75 cents for ink) • Copier – 2 cent page • Best way to save is not to print at all

  7. View of “Energy Use” • Imagine an instructor has 15 students each turning in two-page journal entries printed single-sided. Let’s say the instructor will spend about eight minutes grading each journal entry with corrections and comments regardless if it is digital or on paper. • Traditional grading: It would take 1,800 watt-hours • (1.8 kWh) of energy to produce 30 sheets of paper to print the assignments.* • Paperless grading: It would take 316 watt-hours • (0.316 kWh) to run an average computer continuously for 2 hours to grade electronically.** • That’s a savings of 1,484 watt-hours (1.484 kWh) by grading on a computer as opposed to using paper, the equivalent of saving 1.4 lbs (.635 kg) of coal and reducing emissions by 3.9 lbs (1.769 kg) of carbon dioxide.
