  2. 2. Summary: • The Pilgrims arrive safely, have no friends to welcome them, no houses or shelters from the weather; there are no towns; they face hostile barbarians ready to fill their sides with arrows. • An ocean separates them from their home.

  3. Section 2: The First Encounter • The Pilgrims explore and find corn, beans and seed of the Indians to plant near two shelters; they went exploring and were attacked by Indians – first encounter. • Sent arrows to England. • November 11. They need to find habitation.

  4. Section 3. The Starving Time. • 1. January-February – depth of winter. • 2. The Pilgrims had no houses, were ill with scurvy; two or three per day died; six or seven were well and taking care of everyone else. 50 remained of 100.

Samoset told of Squanto, born in England, who spoke English even better. • The Indians brought their great Sachem, Massasoit. Bradford made peace with him, which continued 24 years.

Squanto is a Native American who was captured and taken to England, and so has learned to speak English. • He becomes the pilgrims’ interpreter. • 3. The Wampanoag teach the Pilgrims how to plant corn, where to fish and how to get around the area. • Their peace treaty secures the Pilgrims from Native American attack.
