  2. Motivation • Most of us use mobile electronic devices that need to be charged. • Many times our batteries run low when we need them the most. • If you are without a charger and not near a power outlet you don’t have many options. • Wouldn’t it be nice if you could charge your USB mobile device simply by walking?

  3. Proposal • I propose to build a device that would use piezoelectric materials inserted into the sole of a shoe that would produce a current with every step. This would be used to charge a rechargeable battery that could been discharged through a USB charging circuit to charge portable USB devices.

  4. Piezoelectricity • Piezoelectric crystals produce a voltage when stressed and this energy can be collected.

  5. Harvest current produced by piezoelectric element. (Capacitor banks?) Generate voltage by stepping on piezoelectric element. Use harvested energy to charge a rechargeable battery by building charging circuit. Discharge battery through a USB charging circuit to charge USB devices.

  6. Considerations • Type of piezoelectric material to use. • Voltage and current produced by piezoelectric material. • Ways to gather energy produced. • Type of rechargeable battery (NiCd, NiMH…) • Type of charging circuit (fast, slow) • Over charge protection. • USB charging. • Small circuits to fit on or in a shoe.
