  1. JOINERY WORKSHOP WOOD OCCUPATION SKILLS JOINERY WORKSHOP: MACHINE TOOLS AND PORTABLE POWER TOOLS

  2. JOINERY WORKSHOP • Machine tools generally operate from 3 phase power supplies, are fixed in position and require skilled labour to operate them. • In many cases, this machinery is large. • Specialist training is required before you can use them. • These machines are fitted with emergency stop buttons. • Machines should be kept clean, maintained as per the manufacturers instructions, only operated by trained personnel and safety guards should ALWAYS be used.

  3. JOINERY WORKSHOP Band saw - This is used for shaping small items in either straight lines or curves due to the small blade.

  4. JOINERY WORKSHOP • Belt / disc sander - This is used for sanding items ready for finishing.

  5. JOINERY WORKSHOP • Cross cut saw - this is used for cutting materials widthways.

  6. JOINERY WORKSHOP • Dimension / panel saw. This is used for cutting sheet materials to size.

  7. JOINERY WORKSHOP • CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) machine, used for cutting large sheet materials to dimensions controlled by computer.

  8. JOINERY WORKSHOP • Sheet materials cut out by a CNC machine. • Sheet material after going through a CNC machine.

  9. JOINERY WORKSHOP • Control panel of a CNC machine. Note the emergency stop button in the bottom right corner of the control panel.

  10. JOINERY WORKSHOP • CNC machine in operation: note the dust extraction system fitted to the machine. • The red screen to the left of the picture is a safety guard.

  11. JOINERY WORKSHOP Dimension / panel saw in operation.

  12. JOINERY WORKSHOP Table saw.

  13. HAND-HELD POWER TOOLS JOINERY WORKSHOP • For safety reasons, hand-held tools should ideally be powered by rechargeable batteries. • Rechargeable batteries provide low voltages, minimising the risk of electric shock. • Where the design of hand-held tools prevent them from being powered by rechargeable batteries, 110 volt tools should be chosen over 240 volt tools. • 110 Volt cables and transformers are yellow in colour.

  14. JOINERY WORKSHOP HAND-HELD POWER TOOLS • Battery operated power tools, showing the rechargeable battery compartments at the base of the tools. Battery compartments

  15. HAND-HELD POWER TOOLS Palm sanders are used to sand small items of work. Palm sanders are lightweight, (generally not weighing more than 1Kg) and operate at roughly 14000 orbits per minute. They can be fitted with dust bags, and sanding paper is held in place using clamps.

  16. HAND-HELD POWER TOOLS • Belt sanders are used for sanding in straight lines as well as sanding open areas. They can be fitted with dust collection systems to help keep work environments clean. Belt speeds are around 350 metres per minute and a belt sander weighs approximately 8 Kg.

  17. HAND-HELD POWER TOOLS • Nail guns are designed for high speed nailing, and can be pneumatically driven. They should only be operated with the muzzle touching the work to be nailed. Trigger Muzzle
