  1. Chleep-PAP Mask ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS 152 SPRING, 2019 NOAH DOVER, SAWYER PENDERGRASS, DAVID HU & DHANEEL JUGJIVAN E212-2; Team Newton-Coulombs 2 April 2019

  2. Who is this for? • We set out to design a CPAP mask that is a custom fit to each individual to ensure comfort that is superior to any other mask. Each mask is different to the last one. • Our goal was to take the CPAP mask, something that many people use on a nightly basis, and make it more comfortable by allowing wearers to sleep on their side at night without mask interference. • Our mask is for any individual who needs a CPAP mask or a replacement for their current mask. Specifically people who are having issues with the way their mask fits and feels.

  3. Why Chleep-PAP? • Many product designers have family members who utilize CPAP masks for Sleep Apnea. • All users complain of the masks discomfort, most notably that they can not sleep on their sides with it on. • As a team, we decided to make a difference and change this.

  4. Initial/Conceptual Design Our initial design was just a custom molded mask attached to the individuals head using a net in order to reduce pressure. This design seemed like a good idea because it hit our target for comfort but failed in the aesthetic aspect of our goals. Also, it was weak and susceptible to breaking. One iteration was the addition of a guard in front of the mask for aesthetics and improved durability. This addition will improve the marketing aspect and help generate sales. Another change we made to the mask was that we changed how the mask would be attached to the individual. Instead of using a singular blue net, we switched to mesh straps after receiving feedback on our initial prototype. Our customers indicated that the net made them feel trapped in the mask.

  6. Our Design The front view of the mask shows that the inside of the mask is guarded with another protective layer that does not affect the overall comfort of the mask. Plus, it highlights the narrow design that allows for sleeping on your side. The side view of the mask shows the stretchy and soft to the touch straps that are a better material than other straps. This back view shows the unique form-fitting design of the mask. Also, it highlights the air pocket in the mask that improves breathability.

  7. Steps for Creating a Mask (How): Our first step was to cut our thermoplastic to the exact dimensions of the face we wanted. We then heated the thermoplastic to mold it to the face and get the desired form fitting shape. After allowing the mold to cool, we then cut a hole to insert the tube. The thermoplastic was then heated to form a tight bond with the mask. From there, we cut holes for attaching the straps. The straps were cut from a yard of the material. We melted the thermoplastic to seal the holes around the mask and waited for it to cool. Finally, we placed a shield over the mask to provide extra protection. This shield also consists of thermoplastic, and was made by cutting the plastic to the correct dimensions. We again headed the thermoplastic to fuse them together, and cut another hole for the tubing to seal to the mask.

  9. Feedback Our client was very intrigued and pleased with our design. The client raved about the comfort of the form fitting mask. The client also expressed positive feedback over the elastec mesh straps. Our client tested the design by sleeping on his left side, back, and right side. At each sleeping position, the client expressed that equal comfort was present for each. Furthermore, the mask experienced no contortion due to is compressed, form fitting structure. This allowed the mask to stay comfortably sealed to his face and did not prohibit sleep. Our client liked the design, form fitting mask, and the mesh straps. The combination of these positively improved sleep.

  10. Cost & Development *All materials Were purchased off of amazon and can be looked up with their respective keywords Thermoplastic sheet: $6 Tube: $2 Straps are $7.58 x 2 (can only order in bulk of 2) = $15.16 $15.16/3(3 masks can be made from this length of strap) = $5.05 which is the cost for single mask Straps: $5.05 Cost for 1 unit: (6+2+5.05) = $13.05 Cost for 1000 sheets worth of masks: $5,000 ($1 off when bought in bulk) Cost for tubing for 1000 mask: $1,500 ($0.50 off when bought in bulk) Cost for straps for 1000 masks: $5,050 (No bulk deals; already bought in bulk) Total cost for 1000 units: $11,550 For retail price, one mask is $11.55 ($11,550/1000), labor for one hour per mask is $7.25 (TN minimum wage), advertising is $2 ($2000 per 1000 masks), overhead is $10400 (50% of total cost of 1000 units, which is an average market competitive price), and delivery is free (medical retailers buy and ship from our company). Retail Price for 1 Unit: $45 (represents a $13.80 profit per mask) Design time: (4 hours in class + 8 hours out of class)*4 people= 48 hours

  11. Summary The Chleep-PAP mask is revolutionary in the fact that consumers can sleep very comfortably on both sides to ensure that adequate rest is gained. The Chleep-PAP has been tested and gained positive feedback for all its features. The Chleep-PAP mask can be produced for less than the prices of the competition masks.
