  1. What Are Waffles, And Their Varieties? What are waffles? Waffles are baked food made out of batter or dough, baked in a metallic waffle maker by pouring the leavened batter in between and heating until it turns golden. There are various shapes and sizes of waffles, eaten worldwide mainly as breakfast but also as dessert or snacks.

  2. Where are waffles most eaten? Waffles are a famous food worldwide. Belgium is the country that eats most of them in the world. Belgian Waffles are famous worldwide. Countries like France, the U.S.A., Germany, China, Vietnam, Netherlands, Thailand, Italy, and India eat waffles. The variety and recipe differ from place to place. History of Waffles. The history is very ancient as it was first observed to be present in the medieval period, the Greeks baked flat cakes in between metal plates and heated them. The recipe spread throughout Europe by that time. The year 1620 witnessed the Dutch pilgrims bringing waffles on their voyage to America. Waffles in India The love for waffles in India is spreading day by day. India, where people are loyal to their culture and tradition is shifting their taste in desserts especially the youth when asked about desserts instead of thinking of gulab jamun and ladoos they imagine ice cream, pastries, and waffles. This is the result of economic liberalization when western cultures started influencing India.

  3. Types of Waffles: Brussels - Brussels is the oldest type of waffle, first occurring in 1842/43. The original recipe of Brussels contained egg-white-leavened batter which later evolved into the yeast-leavened batter. Brussels is often served with chocolate sauce, powdered sugar, berries, and fruits. They are very light and crispy. Liège - Liège’s are sweeter and denser as it is made from thicker dough. Sugar chunks are added to the dough so it caramelizes into a sweet and crunchy coat. Liège waffle is served without toppings. On Belgian streets, it is prepared in varieties like plain, vanilla, and cinnamon.

  4. Liège American - Unlike Belgian, baking powder is used instead of yeast, American is thinner and denser. Best served with chicken, fish, bacon, and ice cream. Another way to make it is with whole grain batter and topped with Greek yogurt or almond butter. Belgian - Belgian is a simplified version of Brussels Waffle. It is well known for larger squares and deeper pockets, Belgian waffles are often much larger than regular ones in both diameter and thickness. Served best with ice cream and fresh fruits it is very famous in North America.

  5. Flemish - Flemish is usually eaten cold but can also serve hot. This type can be preserved for several weeks. They are the specialties of Western Belgium and Northern France. Usually served with syrups, whipped creams, ice creams, berries, orange blossom water, fruit slices, sugar. Bergische - Bergische is a specialty of Bergisches Land in Germany. These are less dense than Belgian and are best served with cherries, rice pudding, and cream. Hong Kong - Hong Kong are round-shaped waffles that are divided into four quarters and also served by turning into a semi-circle. Sugar evaporated milk, and eggs are used to make this. Chocolate, Melon, and Honey are used to create different colors. The Hong Kong style Egg Waffle is a unique street hawker food in Hong Kong. Pandan - Pandan is a Vietnamese-style waffle, which is easy to make. The sweet coconut and delicate pandan flavor really set these waffles apart from others, they’re made with coconut milk instead of regular milk. Loved on the streets of Vietnam, the waffle is golden and green in color. Croffles - With a soft, chewy inside and crunchy outside, croffles are a hybrid between croissants and waffles, croissant dough is baked in a waffle maker. It is popular across the globe, especially in Korea. Basil, corn, and cheese are some toppings used for croffles. Kue gapit- Kue gapit is Indonesian dry snack originated from Cirebon, West Java. It is made from tapioca flour and grilled between waffle makers.

  6. Scandinavian - Scandinavian are heart-shaped waffles and thinner as compared to others. They are made from various milk products like milk, buttermilk, yogurt, cream, or sour cream. These are famous in the Nordic countries. Gofri - Originated in Italy, it is a cuisine of northern Italy and comes in both savory and sweet versions. Gofri is lighter and crispy also it is eggless and contains no milk. Stroopwafel - Stroopwafel originated in the city of dutch called Gouda and is popularly known as a dutch treat and is exported worldwide. The two layers of thin round waffles are filled with caramel. The filling contains spicy buttery syrup. Traditionally it is eaten by placing it above a hot coffee cup till one side becomes soft and keeping another side crispy
