  1. WARM-UP: Discuss the following prompt with a partner: • “Choose one historical event that affected your life. What do you remember about it? How did you participate in it (if at all)? How did the event change your perspective on the world or yourself? Discuss your experiences and thoughts with your partner, taking notes for class discussion.”

  2. Look at the underlined words in paragraph 2 and match them with the definitions • extreme, often uncontrolled anger (2 expressions) • to break into pieces violently • to put your foot down very hard • a cloth that goes over someone’s face and head so that they cannot be recognized • someone who never drinks alcohol • to criticize someone or something unfairly • careful not to have too much food or drink • complete surprise

  3. What did the author of the column, Cynthia Carr, learn when she was 17? • Why does the author say that the news was “frightening”? • How did she learn of her grandfather’s secret identity?

  4. What was her father’s attitude when the “truth” about her grandfather was discovered? • Why do you think the author was so shocked by the discovery? • What else did her grandfather keep secret?

  5. How does the author explain her grandfather’s involvement in the Klu Klux Klan • Why do you think the author “kept silent” for so many years? • What does her friend, Robbie, mean when she says, “Hearing that is a relief.”

  6. What does the author mean when she says, “But I have yet to meet an African-American who so much as batted an eye.” • What do you think are the “implications” the author refers to at the end of the article?
