Design Challenge: Robot with Bumper Switches and Limit Switches

Build and program a robot with bumper switches and limit switches to search a smoke-filled room for a water valve. Design a program that allows the robot to self-navigate and stop when it finds the valve. Extension task: Add functionality to alert the fire team and move to safety.

  2. LESSON 08

  3. LESSON 08 STARTER Can you name the 2 types of switches above? What are they used for?Why are they designed like this?

  4. DESIGN CHALLENGE Learning objective: Respond to different design challenges by applying new skills learnt through the build and programming of a quality product. Build and program a robot with bumper switches and limit switches to search a smoke filled room for a water valve… Scenario: There is a fire in a local warehouse, the room is full of smoke and on the floor is a valve that will turn on the sprinkler system. Design a program for the robot using bumper switches and limit switches that will allow the robot to self navigate around the room and stop when it finds the valve. You will have to think about where you position the switches and how you use them. Extension task: Extend the program so that the robot locates the valve, pauses for 5 seconds to alert the fire team, then moves removes itself to safey.

  5. DESIGN CHALLENGE Create the following test field

  6. DESIGN CHALLENGE Solution Video Watch the video across to see a working outcome. Here is a part screen shot of the program that will achieve it. Bump and limit switch challenge outcome video

  7. LESSON 08 PLENARY As a class, let us consider the following questions?A. In a real life fire situation, what could we have the robot doing when it found a body?B. How could you modify your robot to do it?C. What parts of the robot could be effected by heat or fire?D. How could we modify the robot to overcome this?

  8. SUMMARY Learning objective: Respond to different design challenges by applying new skills learnt through the build and programming of a quality product. • Today you have: • Read and discussed a design brief and specification for a robot. • Developed potential solutions to a problem or task using limited materials and tools. • Begun to build and design a robot to meet a need.
