  1. Unit 3 Sec 2: Washington’s Accomplishments Essential Question: What were the major accomplishments of Washington’s Presidency and what impact did they have on the nation?

  2. Washington’s Accomplishments#1 Washington established many forms in government that survive till today • After becoming President, Washington’s first focused on setting up the federal judiciary. Through the Judiciary Act of 1789, he established a six-member Supreme Court with one Chief Justice and five Associate Justices. Washington established many forms that became part of American tradition like the cabinet system and inaugural address. He ensured a democratic system with tolerance to opposition voices despite fears that it would lead to political violence.

  3. The French Revolution • In 1789 the French overthrew their King • Many French citizens were inspired by the American Revolution • A few years after the revolution started, the French and English went to war….AGAIN! • Many in the U.S. Congress debate on whether to help the French

  4. Washington’s Accomplishments • #2 – The Neutrality Proclamation • Washington wanted to remain neutral. He believed this was the safest plan for the U.S. in the long run.

Washington’s Accomplishments • #3 – The Whiskey Rebellion • People in areas like Pennsylvania were angry at the tax on American-made whiskey passed by Congress. • Whiskey was a cash crop to Pennsylvania farmers. • Farmers were angry! • Fighting broke out in 1794. • Washington personally led an army against the rebels, but the rebellion ended without a battle. • ***This showed that the National Government had the power to enforce its laws!!!

Washington’s Accomplishments • #4 Washington established the United States Navy • Previously American ships were protected by the British and French navies but after the Proclamation of Neutrality, they became vulnerable to pirate attack. By late 1793, a dozen American ships had been captured, goods stripped and everyone enslaved. Due to this Washington signed the Naval Act of 1794 which established a permanent naval force. This force would eventually become the present-day United States Navy.

  7. After nearly 20 years of service to his nation, George Washington signed off by writing a Farewell Address to the people of America. Issued as a public letter in 1796, it remains one of the most influential statements of American political values. Among other things, it stressed on the importance of unity between the people of America. Washington’s Farewell Address became common reference during political debates well into the nineteenth century.

Warned against dangers of foreign ties • 2. Warned the nation to avoid political parties • 3. Warned against too much public debt

  9. Washington’s Accomplishments • #6 - Setting a Precedents (Example) • Adding “So help me God” to the oath of office • Neutrality (Stay out of other’s business) • Presidents only serving 2 terms in office • Use of force to ENFORCE the law (Whiskey Rebellion) • Asking Cabinet member for advice
