  1. Starter Cards - Key Stage 4 Targeting grade C

  2. Introduction • These cards are designed to be used as mental and oral starters at Key Stage 4 • Ideally they should be laminated with the sample key questions on the back • Please add key questions of your own and adapt the cards where appropriate.

  3. c a b

  4. Grade C SAMPLE KEY QUESTIONS - PYTHAGORAS EXTENSIONS • If the length of a is 1 unit and b is 2 units what is the length of c ? • If a and b are both 2 units long …. • If c is √5 what whole number values can you give a and b ? • If c = √10 ……….. • If the hypotenuse is √40 and side b =6 how long is side a ? • If all the sides total 12 find the lengths of a , b and c • If the hypotenuse is √101 and a =1 how long is side b ? • If both sides a and b are 0.5 cm long, how long is side c ? • A square has sides equal to 4 cm. How long is the diagonal ? • A rectangle has diagonal length √40 . If the width of the shape is 2cm, how long is it ? • Tree….. • Flag pole…… • Fisherman …. • Footballer ……

  5. Grade C SAMPLE KEY QUESTIONS - SEQUENCES EXTENSIONS • What is the 7th number in this sequence • …the 10th number….. • What is the nth term … general term • Use the nth term to find the 20th number in the sequence • Describe the sequence in as many ways as you can • What is the 5th red number in the sequence • Describe the blue number sequence in as many ways as you can • What is the nth term for the red number sequence • Use this to find the 20th, 50th, 100th number in the sequence • What is the nth term for the blue ……..

  6. ¼,½,¾,1…

  8. Grade C SAMPLE KEY QUESTIONS – CO-ORDINATES EXTENSIONS The point(0,0) is the mid-point of the line. If A = (4,4)) what are the coordinates of point B? …A=(12,1) ….. ….B=(-3,-1) …. • If this line is the hypotenuse of a right angle triangle , find the coordinates of the vertices of the triangle if B = ( -2,-2) • Find the area ….. • If this line is the diagonal of a rectangle and the point A is ( 3,2) find the area and perimeter of the shape. • if the point A is (4,2) what is the gradient of the line ? • What is the equation of the line?

  9. B A ( 0 , 0 ) C

  10. Grade C SAMPLE KEY QUESTIONS – CO-ORDINATES EXTENSIONS • If the square has side 2 units and is reflected in the x axis what are the new coordinates of point A, B …… • The square is reflected in the y axis • If the square has side 6 units find the coordinates of the centre of the square. • If the perimeter is 8 units find the coordinates of the centre of the square • If the area …… • If the square is rotated clockwise …

  11. Grade C SAMPLE KEY QUESTIONS – AREA PERIMETER ALGEBRA EXTENSIONS • If the perimeter is 49 cm what is the area? … • If the area = 9cm what is the perimeter? … • If the area of ½ the square is 8cm what is its perimeter? … • If the area of the square is a2 what is the perimeter? .. • Join two of these squares together to form a rectangle – find the area and perimeter of this new shape …. • If the length of the side of the square is x+2 , what is the perimeter ….area …

  12. 5 1 3 6 6

  13. SAMPLE KEY QUESTIONS – MEAN MEDIAN MODE RANGE EXTENSIONS Use your hand to cover up the two 6s What is the total? What is the mean … median .. Mode .. Range for the three numbers? Now cover up the 5 and 1 and repeat as above. Try covering up the 5 … Use all five numbers… Cover up the two end numbers ……. • I add one more number to the list and the new mean is 4. • What is that number? What is the new median, mode and range • I add a different number and my new mean is 4.5 ………..
