  1. Paul: a journey of faith Passing the Torch

  2. Background of 2 Timothy • Paul’s 2nd Imprisonment in Rome • Under Nero (c. 66-67) • Languishing in a cold dungeon (2 Timothy 4:13) • Deserted (1:15), except for Luke • Chained like a criminal (1:16) • No easily assessable (1:17) • Expecting the worst (4:6-8) • Final Words

  3. Eusebius “Thus Nero publicly announcing himself as the chief enemy of God, was led on in his fury to slaughter the apostles. Paul is therefore said to have been beheaded at Rome and Peter to have been crucified under him. And this is confirmed by the fact that the names of Peter and Paul still remain in the cemeteries of that city even to this day.”

  4. 2 Timothy 1:5-7 • I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

  5. 2 Timothy 1:8-9 • So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life--not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,

  6. Personal Words • I know where you’ve come from. • I know what you’ve become: sincere faith • I know what you must do: • Fan the flame (continuous activity) • Tell the truth (with courage) • Join the journey (holy) • Share the sufferings • Share the grace

  7. Personal Words • 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. 13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

  8. Personal Words • My Treasure • I Suffer, but I am not Ashamed • I Know what I Believe • I am Convinced • Guard the Deposit • Entrusted (Gospel or Soul?) • Your Treasure • Keep (healthy teaching) w/ faith & love • Guard (sound teaching)

  9. Table Talk • What does it mean for you to entrust your life or soul to God? • What is the believer’s role in guarding sound teaching these days?

  10. 2 Timothy 4:6-8 • For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

  11. Painful Words • Poured Out (fulfilled purpose) • Weigh Anchor (“departure”) • Kept the Faith • Fought the fight (athletics) • Ran the race (completed action) • Looking to the Prize • A victor’s crown belonging to the righteous • That Day (his appearing)

  12. 2 Timothy 4:16-18 • At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

  13. Parting Words • The Lord stood by me and gave me strength… • I was rescued… • The Lord…will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. • To him be the glory…

  14. Table Task • Please take a few moments to complete an anonymous evaluation of this class. We have one final lesson next week.
