  5. Tides Learning Target: I can differentiate between High and Low tides and how often they occur. I can name at least 2 location where you can see tides happening everyday. I can work cooperatively with my partner to determine what causes tides. I can illustrate Spring and Neap tides. I can determine that Spring tides have NOTHING to do with the seasons.

  10. Lunar or Moon Tide Moon’s gravity pulls on the Earth, and pulls the water towards it. The water moves up into a slight bulge on the side of the Earth that faces the moon. At the same time, water on the opposite side of Earth bulges due to the motion of the Earth and the Moon around each other.

  12. Moon Tide Earth’s rotation and the moon's orbit around the Earth determine when tides occur. Tides occur at different spots on Earth because Earth rotates more quickly than the moon revolves around Earth. It takes 24 hours and 50 minutes for a spot on Earth to rotate and face the moon again.   17. Castle Mont-St.-Michel This is small rocky island about 1 km from the north coast of France near Normandy. The tides surrounding the “Mount” can vary by 14 meters between high and low tides, and may move in as rapidly as 1 meter per second. The “Mount” is connected to the mainland by a thin natural land bridge, which before modernization was covered by the sea at high tide, and revealed during the low tide.

  21. SPRING TIDES • Spring tides have big differences between high and low tide. • They have NOTHING to do with the seasons! • EXTRA HIGH TIDES and very low tides.

  22. SPRING TIDES • They occur when the EarthSunMoon are in a straight line. Spring tides occur during the FULL moon And the NEW moon phases. The gravitational forces of the Moon and Sun both contribute to the tides. Which creates the maximum tidal range

  23. SPRING Tides produce LARGER tides (bulge) because the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun are combined.

  25. NEAP TIDES • Neap tides are especially weak tides. You can’t see a real difference in HIGH and low tides. • The Moon and Sun are perpendicular to each. • The Earth, Moon and Sun form right angles. Neap tides occur during 1st & 3rd QUARTER Moon phases. Gravitational pull from The Moon & Sun cancel each other out, creating a Minimumal tidal range)

  26. In a NEAP Tide, the Sun and Moon are opposing, creating a smaller bulge, thus a smaller tide.
